Match Preview

Shrimps wait on duo Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy will assess the fitness of defensive duo Will Haining and Chris McCready ahead of the home clash with Shrewsbury. The pair have been suffering with hamstring problems in recent weeks and could miss out again. Yet McIlroy will be reluctant to make changes after his side ground out a 1-0 victory at Bradford last weekend. Defender Paul Scott missed out through injury last weekend and will also be assessed but McIlroy is in optimistic mood following last weekend's win at Valley Parade. The Shrimps manager has heaped lavish praise on winger Mark Duffy following his impressive start to the season. "Mark has been excellent in recent weeks and put in some really good displays," said McIlroy. Shrewsbury will leave it as late as possible before checking on the fitness of Shane Cansdell-Sherriff and Craig Disley. Defender Cansdell-Sherriff sustained a groin injury in training that forced him to miss Tuesday`s Johnstone`s Paint Trophy defeat at Bury while midfielder Disley picked up an ankle knock towards the end of the tie and was forced off. Both have got a chance of making the clash but face a race against time to prove their fitness. Boss Graham Turner is definitely boosted by the return to full fitness of midfield pair Sean McAllister (hamstring) and Benjamin Van den Broek, the latter of whom has not featured for almost a month since suffering ankle ligament damage. Turner made five changes for the shoot-out defeat at Gigg Lane but he will revert to his strongest XI at the Globe Arena as Shrews look to end their four-match winless run.

Match Report

Stan the man for Shrimps A late Craig Stanley goal gave Morecambe a 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury, their first league win at the Globe Arena. Stanley raced into the box to head home Mark Duffy's right wing cross seven minutes from time to cap a historic afternoon for the Shrimps on the day their new #12m stadium was officially opened. It was a win the home side fully deserved and had it not been for Shrewsbury keeper Chris Neal they could have won by a much bigger margin. Neal made a string of fine saves including a 56th-minute penalty from Mark Duffy after David Raven had brought down the impressive Stanley. Shrewsbury had the better of the opening stages with Jake Robinson and Ian Sharps forcing Barry Roche into blocks before Morecambe found their feet. The Shrimps were denied an opening goal on the half hour when Neal somehow blocked Paul Mulllin's point-blank header, and five minutes later Adam Rundle saw a volley cleared off the line by Kevin McIntyre. Shrewsbury hit back with Sean McAllister drilling in an effort that was deflected wide by Andy Parrish and Mark Wright should have done better when teed up by McIntyre. Morecambe had the better of the second period with Rundle volleying over and defender Jim Bentley hitting the crossbar from 12 yards.
