Match Report

Shrewsbury Town and Morecambe both stretched their unbeaten records, but neither were able to break the deadlock in an entertaining, but goal-less encounter at the Prostar Stadium.

The home side came into the match on the back of a four match unbeaten run, while visiting Morecambe had gone 11 games without tasting defeat and although Shrewsbury dominated for long periods of the afternoon, they were unable to breach a well-drilled and committed Morecambe defence.

With Shrewsbury in one of the play-off places and Morecambe rapidly climbing the table in search of one, the opening exchanges were neat and energetic without causing either goalkeeper too many alarms - but in the 20th minute Shrewsbury winger Chris Humphrey fizzed a shot just over the Morecambe cross bar and shortly afterward a sweeping move resulted in a low drive from midfielder Terry Dunfield, that brought a diving save from Morecambe keeper Barry Roche.

While Town goalkeeper Luke Daniels spent the first half relatively untroubled, Roche became busier as the half unfolded and right on the stroke of half-time he beat away a fierce drive from Grant Holt who had broken clear of the Morecambe rearguard.

After the break Shrewsbury continued to press and Roche had to be alert as Ben Davies curled in a free-kick which was saved at the second attempt.

With a quarter of an hour remaining, Davies was in the thick of the action again, but when he went crashing to the ground inside the Morecambe box, referee Langford waved aside loud and prolonged shouts for a penalty.

There were more appeals for a penalty when substitute Richard Walker appeared to be impeded by two Morecambe defenders and there were more anxious moments right at the death for Sammy McIlroy's men, when Shrewsbury were awarded a free-kick 25 yards from goal.

Shrewsbury substitute Steve Leslie struck it sweetly, but Roche held on to it, this allowed Morecambe to hang on to a point.
