Match Report

Brentford were booed off for the second week in a row, following a dire defeat by Morecambe on Tuesday night.

Furious fans gathered after the match to call for boss Terry Butcher's head just as they did after last week's FA Cup defeat to Luton.

Former Manchester United junior Michael Twiss sealed Brentford's fourth successive defeat with a soft goal on 55 minutes. In truth, Brentford could have fallen behind a lot earlier, with Jon Newby being denied a penalty when he went down in the box on 20 minutes and Garry Hunter shooting over when given time and space a few minutes later.

Glenn Poole then went close for the Bees, before Carl Baker saw a goal ruled out for a foul on keeper Simon Brown and Damien Allen headed just over for the visitors.

Twiss then gave a taste of what was to come when his free header was held by Brown, but Brentford could have taken an undeserved half-time lead when rookie striker Ross Montague missed a sitter from a Lee Thorpe cross, before loanee Ryan Dickson snatched at a chance which he sent wide on the stroke of the interval.

However, it was Morecambe who took the lead ten minutes after the break when Brentford failed to clear their lines and Twiss pounced.

Brentford sparked to life as Thorpe just failed to get to a Craig Pead through ball, before Poole saw his shot from a Dickson cross blocked and Sammy Moore fired just wide, but Morecambe were not finished either and it took a good save from Brown to deny Newby the chance to the game safe for the visitors.

Brentford came close with a final throw of the dice in injury time when sub Alan Connell hit a fizzing shot on the turn but it sailed just wide.

It was a disappointing night for Brentford skipper John Mackie in particular who got involved in an altercation with home fans after being subbed on 33 minutes, having earlier been elbowed off the ball by David Artell which was missed by the referee.
