Match Report

A relieved McClaren said: "This was a small step towards recovery but there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to be done.

"I was pleased with the reaction of the players after Saturday and very pleased with the response of the crowd. We got together as a football club tonight.

"A defining moment was early in the game when Brad Jones made a vital save. Once we got a goal we settled down. It was a professional job.

"All credit to Nuneaton for they kept going to the end."

Nuneaton boss Roger Ashby remained upbeat despite his side's Cup adventure coming to an end.

He said: "When we went five goals down I was concerned over what the score would be.

"But my players didn't drop their heads and our fans were great. It was like a carnival after the game. You would have thought we had won. My players were still celebrating in the dressing room after the game.

"It was a great night for both clubs. It was important for them and we wanted to do ourselves justice.

"After a draw at home it was like a cup final here for us. I think everyone has gone home happy. Boro fans will be thrilled with a win and our supporters knew the players didn't let them down."
