FULL TIME: MIDDLESBROUGH 0-0 NEWCASTLE. Finally the game is over. It seems to have taken forever but this derby only intermittently threatened to spark into life.
The game seems to be drifting once more towards a goalless draw now with both sides looking out of ideas.
Charles N'Zogbia tries his luck from the corner of the box but his effort drifts wide of the far post and Turnbull was never really troubled there.
Bassong collects a yellow card for a foul on Alves.
Great chance! Wheater rises highest to meet Downing's inswinging corner but his glancing header slides wide of the far post.
Boro are making their first change of the game as Mido replaces Aliadiere.
Brilliant save from Given! Aliadiere gets to the byline and cuts the ball back for Justin Hoyte who has ventured forward but he is denied by Given at point-blank range.
Almost an immediate impact from Viduka as Owen heads the ball down in the box but Pogatetz takes the big Australian's half volley full in the chest.
Arca collects a yellow card for tripping Nicky Butt.
Julio Arca is allowed to drive towards the area and have an effort on goal from long range but it skids wide of Given's goal.
The first change of the afternoon and it's very unpopular with the home crowd as Boro old boy Mark Viduka replaces Obafemi Martins.
Alves is the man finding all the openings for Boro in this second half but his finishing has been nothing ahort of atrocious as again he balloons high and side from inside the box.
The game has officially come to life now as Newcastle clear the corner and Martins beats Hoyte and advances into the box but Wheater slides in to block his shot.
Arca and Digard combine on the edge of the box to create a chance for Alves but that man Bassong is across again to deflect his shot wide.
Bassong and Coloccini are putting on a real defensive clinic at the moment as Boro continue to press.
Newcastle can't get out of their own final third at the minute and Boro are really looking to push home their territorial advantage.
Best chance of the game! Afonso Alves twists and turns in the box and Bassong gets himself back on the line to block. Superb defending.
Quickly up the other end and N'Zogbia delivers a wicked ball into the box that Wheater does well not to turn into his own net.
Whisper it quietly but this game could be coming to life at last as Boro break quickly and only a good tackle from Coloccini prevents Alves running free on goal.
Danny Guthrie finds himself in an advanced position for almost the first time this afternoon and he almost finds the top corner with a clever bending effort.
Downing curls a superb cross in between the defenders and Shay Given but there are no Boro players anticipating it and it goes to waste.
The second period is underway and for the sake of all concerned it must surely get better.
HALF TIME: MIDDLESBROUGH 0-0 NEWCASTLE. A dismal first half is ended by referee Wiley and surely both managers will be happy to get their teams into the dressing room now.
That burst of activity was really the highlight of this opening period and as injury time approaches it appears it will end goalless.
Half a chance for Boro as Downing escapes the attentions of Beye and swings over for Alves but its a fraction too high and the Brazilian can't keep his header down.
All of a sudden Obafemi Martins explodes into life but Pogatetz is alive to block not one, but two shots from the ligthning Nigerian.
Both sides are really struggling to find any gaps in the final third of the pitch and the defences are well and truly on top.
Good pressure from Boro but Alves is needlessly offside in the right hand channel and Newcastle are able to clear easily.
The second attempt of note is also from the left boot of a Boro midfielder - this time it's Arca but again its a fraction too high.
The early tempo has dropped significantly now and you would not know this was a derby game with the way it is currently being played.
Absolutely nothing going on really here in the derby and hte crowd have fallen flat as a result for the time being.
Newcastle look pretty solid at the back so far, continuing from last week's superb display, and Boro don't look capable of creating a real chance.
Smart goalkeeping from Turnbull as Guthrie tries to feed Martins in behind but the Boro stopper is out quickly to smash away before the Nigerian can reach the pass.
Boro are really taking a bit of a hold over proceedings at the moment and Downing is again involved as he fires just over from the edge of the box.
A period of sustained pressure from free-kicks and corner-kicks for Boro but Downing's delivery fails to really cause a major problem this time.
Newcastle have looked a bit scrappy and they have struggled to keep possession in the opening stages.
Boro are starting to ease themselves into control now and Tuncay reverses for Alves this time but again Coloccini is in the right place at the right time to deflect his shot wide.
Delightful from Arca as he feeds a clever ball into the channel run of Downing but Coloccini is across smartly to cut out the immediate danger.
The crowd are certainly up for it but we are yet to see any signs of an incident sparking the players into life - as yet not a crunching tackle in sight.
Good start from the visitors as they look to take the early intiative and Gutierrez crosses to the far post but Hoyte is able to hook it away.
Alan Wiley is the man in the middle of this potentially volatile clash and he gets it underway.
Newcastle: Given, Beye, Coloccini, Bassong, Jose Enrique, Gutierrez, Guthrie, Butt, N'Zogbia, Martins, Owen
Kinnear has decided against starting local lad Steven Taylor as Sebastien Bassong partners Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of the defence - Michael Owen also starts for the second consecutive game.
Middlesbrough: Turnbull, Hoyte, Wheater, Pogatetz, Taylor, Aliadiere, Arca, Digard, Downing, Tuncay, Alves
Southgate has opted for the creativity of Julio Arca over the energy of Gary O'Neil in Boro's only change from the defeat to Bolton.
Newcastle finally had some good news to celebrate as Joe Kinnear signed a contract to the end of the season as the club's official Manager. The news coming off the back of a sterling effort to draw 0-0 at table-topping Chelsea.
Middlesbrough were on a superb unbeaten run until Bolton turned them over last time out but confidence will still be high amongst Gareth Southgate's young squad.
Welcome to the Riverside Stadium where Middlesbrough entertain Newcastle in the Tyne-Tees derby.
Gareth Southgate is prepared to persevere with Afonso Alves for this weekend's Tees-Tyne derby against Newcastle United even though the Brazilian is lacking in confidence after finding the net only three times so far this season. The striker was substituted after producing a dire display in the 3-1 home defeat to Bolton Wanderers last Saturday but, with Mido still troubled by a hamstring injury, Alves is likely to face Joe Kinnear's side. Southgate had said of his £12.7million striker: "I thought Afonso's head dropped a little bit against Bolton and it was right to bring him off at the time we did. "His task now is to work hard and get back to doing the things that got him goals in the past. "Afonso's goalscoring record is there for everyone to see. He has to believe that he can work his way through this." Egypt international Mido has not started a game since last month's 5-0 home defeat to Chelsea but may win a place on the substitute's bench on Saturday if he proves his fitness. Boro's inconsistency continues to undermine them with impressive victories over Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa being offset by disappointing setbacks against West Brom, Sunderland and Bolton. Chris Riggott (hamstring) and Robert Huth (ankle) join Mido on the doubtful list for Saturday's match as Boro attempt to clinch their sixth league win of the campaign. Interim boss Kinnear has definitely improved Newcastle's results on the pitch since he arrived at St James' Park at the end of September, but his side are still in the bottom three. Kinnear's first game in charge - the 2-1 home defeat to Blackburn - was Newcastle's fifth successive loss, but since then the Magpies have tasted defeat only twice in their last eight matches. However, last Saturday's impressive stalemate at Chelsea was their fourth draw in that sequence and Kinnear's side need to put together a winning run soon if they are to move out of trouble.
Newcastle United manager Joe Kinnear will probably be the happier of the two bosses after his side earned a goalless against Middlesbrough at the Riverside. For the second successive match Newcastle kept a clean sheet to raise hopes of pulling away from the relegation zone. Kinnear has been put in charge until the end of the season and this decision could have a stabilising effect after months of uncertainty. Newcastle, in fact, have invariably done well on this ground with only two defeats in Premier League clashes. Middlesbrough suffered a pre-match blow when midfield player Gary O'Neil was ruled out with a training ground injury. After a seven-month injury nightmare former Middlesbrough striker Mark Viduka was named among Newcastle's substitutes. Boro launched the first serious attack with England winger Stewart Downing not far off target with a strong shot. Turkish international Tuncay was a livewire as the home side had more of the attacking play in the opening stages. Obafemi Martins looked dangerous for Newcastle, but he was dispossessed by a brilliant tackle by David Wheater as he threatened. Shortly after Martins beat his marker and struck the crossbar with Ross Turnbull beaten. It was a slice of luck for Middlesbrough. Middlesbrough striker Martins Afonso Alves headed over the bar from a good chance and was injured in the process, before Nicky Butt landed a free-kick on the roof of the net. Alves had been ineffective in the Boro attack and it was surprising that manager Gareth Southgate did not introduce fit again Mido immediately after the break. Danny Guthrie flashed a shot just wide of the post for Newcastle, but with the game crying out for a goal neither goalkeeper was seriously tested. The visitors introduced Viduka after 65 minutes, with a clearly unhappy Martins withdrawn. Kinnear could easily have taken off skipper Michael Owen for he was completely anonymous in the Newcastle attack. Alves cut in from the left and unleashed a strong shot over the bar, before Shay Given saved at the near post from Justin Hoyte. Middlesbrough fans called for the introduction of Mido and they got their wish in the 77th minute. Southgate, however, withdrew Jeremie Aliadiere. However, Mido had few opportunities to try and snatch a late win, in what was overall a sporting game with only two bookings.
