Match Preview

Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand will miss Monday's Premier League clash with Middlesbrough after suffering a back spasm in the warm-up before the 1-0 win at Stoke City.

The England international had been named in the starting line-up for the Boxing Day Britannia Stadium encounter but had to withdraw shortly before kick-off, with Jonny Evans coming into the team to replace him.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said after the victory: "Rio won't play against Middlesbrough.

"He had a back spasm again. We have to get to the root of this. He's had this back problem too many times, so we want to get to the bottom of it.

"First of all, we'll give him complete rest, but I think he'll be okay in about ten days."

Ferdinand will join the suspended Patrice Evra and injury absentees Ben Foster (wrist) and Owen Hargreaves (knee) on the Old Trafford sidelines.

Dimitar Berbatov is pushing for a recall after his substitute appearance against the Potters following the illness he suffered during the Club World Cup in Japan.

However, he may find it difficult to dislodge Carlos Tevez from the starting line-up as his late winner on Boxing Day kept the champions within touching distance of the pace-setters.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side are seven points adrift of leaders Liverpool but do have two games in hand.

Meanwhile, Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate has called for hard work and commitment from his players to stop their slide towards the drop zone.

Boro are above the relegation zone only on goal difference after their 1-0 defeat at home to Everton on Boxing Day saw their winless run extended to seven games.

"We are going to find things out over the next month or so," he said. "There will be a lot of talking and work on the training ground and whoever plays we have got 19 games to get as high up the table as we can."

Defender David Wheater is set to return to the starting line-up to help bolster a leaking defence.

But the majority of Southgate's problems surround his mis-firing strikeforce as Sanli Tuncay, Jeremie Aliadiere and Mido all flattered to deceive on Boxing Day.

Match Report

Manchester United gave manager Sir Alex Ferguson the perfect birthday present with their seventh consecutive Premier League win of the season at Old Trafford.

Middlesbrough always make life hard for the Red Devils and it took United 69 minutes to break them down, with Dimitar Berbatov delivering the only goal of the game for Ferguson, who will be 67 on Wednesday.

United had battered away at Boro's dogged defence without success until Berbatov relieved the tension for the English, European and newly crowned World Champions.

Cristiano Ronaldo found Ji-Sung Park in the centre of the Boro box. He flicked the ball left to Michael Carrick and, although his initial cross was blocked, the England midfielder knocked the rebound back into the centre.

Boro defender David Wheater failed to clear the danger with a downward header which landed perfectly for Berbatov to lash the ball right-footed into the net from eight yards.

It was a frustrating night for United and Ronaldo in particular.

Barged over in the box by Emanuel Pogatetz in the closing seconds of the first half, Ronaldo continued his argument with the Boro player as they left the pitch at the interval.

Ronaldo also went close on a number of occasions with shots from all distances and all angles.

His best chance was a glaring 22nd minute miss when he fired wide from ten yards at the near post after Wayne Rooney had picked him out with a pin-point cross from the left.

But Ronaldo was not the only United player to feel the frustration.

Rooney must also have wondered what he had to do to score, although in his case it was largely due to the brilliance of Boro goalkeeper Ross Turnbull.

With the first half moving into injury time, Darren Fletcher fired a long ball out of defence. Ronaldo headed the ball on to Rooney coming up on the left and he hit a vicious shot, which Turnbull superbly turned away at full stretch.

Turnbull had also denied Rooney early on when he palmed away another good effort from the England striker.

Turnbull did well to save further shots from Ronaldo and Park, while at the other end, United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was rarely troubled.

United's win now puts them seven points behind leaders Liverpool with two home games in hand- a position with which Ferguson and his men will be happy with as they enter the New Year.
