Match Report

Middlesbrough face a daunting trip to Old Trafford this weekend, to face a side full of confidence, goals and wins.

Manchester United have scored four times in each of their last three games, blasting their way out of the 1-0 streak which had threatened to stall their chase of Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The latest victory came in Ukraine on Tuesday when they won 4-2 in an attacking, open game against Dynamo Kyiv.

The Red Devils had been criticised for spending money over the summer without recruiting a proven striker, though the last three games have apparently proved that argument redundant.

Midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo has scored four times, striker Wayne Rooney three times and even defender Rio Ferdinand has bagged a couple over the last three matches.

Fresh injuries have ruled out at least one player, with Paul Scholes facing a lengthy spell out after hurting his knee in training before the match in Kyiv.

Patrice Evra was also forced to pull out of that tie when he strained his calf muscle just minutes before kick-off and he remains a doubt for Saturday's clash.

John O'Shea filled the left-back role on Tuesday and could remain there against Middlesbrough, giving Darren Fletcher the chance to start alongside Anderson in central midfield.

United continue to have midfielder Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves sidelined, while Gary Neville remains a doubt.

Middlesbrough's injury list is comparable to that of their opponents, although they don't have the squad depth to cope as well as the reigning league champions.

Jeremie Aliadiere may be joined by Emanuel Pogatetz in the list of Boro players returning to fitness, but neither are likely to feature on Saturday.

Defenders Matthew Bates and Robert Huth, plus midfield star Julio Arca, are longer-term absentees for a team which has failed to concede less than two goals since September 1.

Even manager Gareth Southgate admitted that the current football being played at the Riverside Stadium is not what it should be.

"Everything has gone a little bit flat - we've got to get that spark back," he admitted.

"But we have to maintain a sense of perspective. We were in a similar position this time last year. We've got plenty to come back into the side and into the squad."
