Match Preview

Hull City have made an excellent start to their first-ever season in the top-flight, but visitors Middlesbrough will pose another serious test of the Tigers' mettle.

Phil Brown's side are currently sixth in the Premier League table, but they have failed to register a win in their last six games.

However, things are not quite as bad as they might seem, with City having drawn their last three games and defeats to Chelsea, Manchester United and Bolton Wanderers.

Brown does, however, have doubts over one of his most consistent performers, this season, with midfielder Dean Marney having suffered a dead leg in the 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

"Dean picked up a dead-leg late on in the game," Brown confirmed.

"We've wrapped him up in cotton wool for the early part of the week, but we'll see how he gets on in the next few days for him to be playing a part on Saturday."

Left-back Andy Dawson is also a doubt as he continues to struggle with an Achilles problem which has kept him sidelined for City's last three games.

Boro arrive at the KC Stadium without a win in their last three games, although boss Gareth Southgate remains upbeat about his side's current form.

He said after the goalless draw at home to Newcastle United last time out: "We allowed them a few breaks and they had a chance near the end which we shouldn't have allowed them to have, but I am very pleased with how we played.

"Sometimes you draw a game and you are disappointed with the performance, but I thought bar the finishing touch, we had pretty much everything.

"We defended solidly, passed the ball well, created not clear-cut chances, but we looked a threat all the time."

Southgate still has injury problems in defence, with both Robert Huth (ankle) and Chris Riggott (hamstring) currently sidelined.

Match Report

A frantic last ten minutes saw Hull City come from behind to take all three points against Middlesbrough at the KC Stadium.

Boro took the lead through Tuncay with ten minutes to go, but a Ross Turnbull own goal and a Marlon King penalty saw the home side pick up their first win in six matches.

Superb vision from George Boateng midway through the first half gave Hull a chance to take the lead as the ex-Boro man hit a 30-yard ball up to Geovanni in space, but the Brazilian's square the ball across the six-yard box was well cut out by David Wheater.
Geovanni was then found in space by King as the Wigan loanee picked him out with a curling left-footed cross, but Hull's leading scorer got his header all wrong as he sent the ball well wide of the target.

The home side were awarded a free-kick on the half-hour mark as Jeremie Aliadiere brought down Geovanni on the edge of the box, the ex-Barcelona man took it himself but his right-footed effort was deflected wide of the post.

Stewart Downing had a chance for the visitors just before the break as an Aliadiere cross from the right found its way to the England international, but his left-footed strike from just inside the box whistled just past the post.

Geovanni stepped up a gear in the second half and nearly created the opener as the Hull man skipped past two defenders and played a ball into King, but the Tigers frontman could only smash his shot well wide of the post from close range.

It was Middlesbrough who took the lead on 79 minutes as Justin Hoyte raced down the right and played in a low cross towards Tuncay, who cleverly backheeled the ball past Boaz Myhill and into the net from close range.

However Hull were back on level terms a minute later as substitute Bernard Mendy picked the ball up on the right-hand side of the box and fired in a low shot which saw the ball hit the post, bounce off back off keeper Ross Turnbull and roll over the line.

Phil Brown's men were then awarded a penalty on 85 minutes after Wheater saw red for bringing down Geovanni in the area.

King took the spot-kick and buried the ball underneath the outstretched Turnbull and into the bottom corner of the net to make it 2-1.
