Match Report

Everton will hope to halt their slide down the Premier League table on Sunday when Middlesbrough visit Merseyside.

The Toffees have dropped to ninth, losing to Manchester United and Aston Villa in the league while failing to beat lowly Ukrainian side FC Metalist Kharkiv at home in the UEFA cup.

They also lost Joseph Yobo and Mikel Arteta to injury before the 3-0 Carling Cup win over Sheffield Wednesday in midweek.

Alan Stubbs replaced Yobo, who was ill and should be back to face Boro, while Arteta's ankle injury is thought to be more serious.

Despite signing striker Yakubu for £11million in August, it has been in the attacking department when Everton have failed.

England international Andrew Johnson missed two penalties again Kharkiv, extending his goal drought which began in March.

This has led to reports linking FC Basel's Ecuadorian forward Felipe Caicedo with a move to Everton.

But until the transfer window re-opens in January manager David Moyes will have to juggle Victor Anichebe and James McFadden with Johnson and Yakubu as the quest for goals continues.

Middlesbrough have striking problems of their own with Mido, their only recognised forward to score this season, injuring his hamstring during the 2-2 draw with Sunderland last weekend.

However, both he and Tuncay Sanli, the Turkish international hitman, have been pencilled in to start up front together against Everton.

With Tuncay also being forced off against Sunderland with a leg injury, Boro manager Gareth Southgate will be relieved at their immediate return.

"Both Mido and Tuncay have gone for scans and there's no significant damage and both have a chance of playing on Sunday," he told the club's website during the week.

He had worse news on Monday when the extent of left midfielder Julio Arca's knee injury was revealed.

"The injury to Julio looks more serious. It's the medial ligaments in his knee and it looks like it will be at least two months," announced Southgate, before explaining his intention to give youth a chance.
