Match Preview

Chelsea's pursuit of Premier League leaders Manchester United continues with the visit of Middlesbrough to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening.

Twenty-four hours after United had the opportunity to extend their lead over the third-placed Blues to five points, Luiz Felipe Scolari's side are in action in what has been billed as a must-win game.

A United victory over West Brom coupled with a Chelsea defeat would see the champions pull further away at the top of the table with a game in hand - a scenario the London club can scarcely afford.

However, following a recent disappointing series of results, the green shoots of recovery were in evidence as the Blues booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Two goals from Michael Ballack and a third by Frank Lampard secured the comfortable win, but the match also witnessed the return to action of Didier Drogba.

The Ivory Coast striker was a second-half substitute on his recall after being dropped for two games and all the talk after the game was of a new 'united' Chelsea side keen to launch an assault on the title.

Portugal midfielder Deco returned to action after injury to further boost the Blues, who have now won all three games since losing 3-0 at Old Trafford earlier in the month.

That leaves only John Terry (back) and long-term knee ligament victims Michael Essien and Joe Cole on the sidelines, although Ricardo Carvalho faces a fitness test on a hamstring problem.

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate is hoping Saturday's 2-1 FA Cup fourth round victory over Championship leaders Wolves can translate into an improvement in league form.

Boro, who are languishing in 18th place in the league table, secured their passage courtesy of goals from Afonso Alves and Marvin Emnes.

In the league, Southgate's side have failed to win any of their last ten games and find themselves in a five-strong group of back markers currently locked together on 21 points.

But despite their cup boost, the Teessiders are far from assured a similar result against Chelsea as they were thrashed 5-0 by the London club at the Riverside Stadium in mid-October.

Southgate's plans have also hardly been helped by the loss of three defenders - Emanuel Pogatetz, Justin Hoyte and Chris Riggott - to injury.

Match Report

Salomon Kalou's double strike propelled Chelsea back to second place in the Premier League table as the Blues defeated Middlesbrough 2-0 and Wigan forced a draw at home to Liverpool.

The Londoners leapfrog the Scousers and are now two points behind leaders Manchester United.

A goal in each half saw off defence-minded Middlesbrough at Stamford Bridge.

The home side completely dominated the game from start to finish.

Ashley Cole almost opened his season's account on 12 minutes by darting to the far post to meet Jose Bosingwa's right-wing cross. Unfortunately for the left-back his header smacked against the side-netting.

Michael Ballack's curling 20-yard free-kick then zipped off the greasy surface on 15 minutes but Ross Turnbull got his body behind it and parried the ball to safety.

The visitors' first attempt on goal came on 22 minutes when a powerful Stewart Downing free-kick was blocked by Alex.

Until that point Boro had struggled to get out of their own half, such was Chelsea's dominance of possession.

Didier Drogba was brought on at half-time for the luckless Florent Malouda and the Ivory Coast striker was clean through within a minute but scuffed his right-footer wide of Turnbull's right post.

Kalou had a glorious chance to put the home side ahead on 55 minutes but somehow managed to clip a header from six yards out over the bar when it was easier to nod it past Turnbull.

But he made amends three minutes later when, from Frank Lampard's corner, the ball fell to Alex whose header was cleared into the path of Kalou by defender David Wheater and the striker hit a sweet right-footed volley cleanly into the net from just inside the penalty area.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate rang the changes bringing on Afonso Alves and Tuncay for Marlon King and the ineffectual Mohamed Shawky on 64 minutes.

A quick breakaway from Chelsea five minutes later saw Nicolas Anelka race into the Boro penalty area on the right and send in a low pass to Lampard who bizarrely attempted to slide the ball in with his left foot instead of his natural right and the ball clipped off the foot and away to safety.

Chelsea scored their second on 81 minutes when Kalou rose, unmarked, from Lampard's left-sided corner. Turnbull came out for the ball but missed it and the Ivory Coast striker headed home into an empty net from six yards out.

Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari rewarded Kalou for his brace by immediately substituting him for Deco but the Blues eased their way through the final minutes to record three vital points.
