Match Preview

Samp close in on qualification Sampdoria will attempt to take a significant step towards the Europa League round of 32 when they visit Metalist Kharkiv. While Metalist have won just once so far in the competition, the Italians have taken four points from their fixtures against PSV Eindhoven and Debrecen and currently lead Group I alongside the Dutch side. The Genoa outfit now have a good chance to further strengthen their position and will be in buoyant mood after ending a five-match winless streak in Serie A at the weekend. Samp came from behind to beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Sunday and climb to seventh in the league standings. Despite that inspiring result though, Samp coach Domenico Di Carlo will ring the changes for the trip to Ukraine. In view of next weekend's match at Inter Milan, captain Angelo Palombo and striker Giampaolo Pazzini have remained in Genoa. Nicola Pozzi is expected to partner Antonio Cassano in Samp's attack. Metalist have reason to be confident as they eliminated Samp in the last 32 of the 2008-09 UEFA Cup, winning 1-0 in Genoa and 2-0 in Ukraine. However, Italian midfielder Daniele Dessena, who played in those two games, has warned Metalist to expect a stronger Sampdoria. "It's going to be a different game with respect to our previous meetings against them," said Dessena. "Two years ago, we were going through a difficult spell where things weren't going to plan. "But now we are going to Ukraine with the right spirit, thanks to our win over Fiorentina. "We know it will not be easy but a victory would give us a big lift in our hopes of progressing in this competition." Metallist, who lost 2-0 to PSV Eindhoven last time out, have yet to taste success at home this season in Europe, but can take hope from the fact that Samp are winless on the road since beating Partizan Belgrade 2-1 in 2008. Myron Markevich's men head into the encounter at the Metalist Stadion on the back of last weekend's 3-1 win over Volyn, which lifted them to third in the Ukrainian Premier League.

Match Report

Xavier seals it for Kharkiv Brazilian midfielder Cleiton Xavier scored the winner as 10-man Metalist Kharkiv turned in a gutsy performance to beat Sampdoria 2-1 in an action-packed Europa League Group I tie at the Oblasny SportKomplex. The Ukrainians had striker Taison sent off in the 57th minute after he had put them ahead in the first half. But they dug in for the victory which takes them above Sampdoria to lie second on six points behind PSV Eindhoven in their group. It was a match which always had an edge because in the tournament's previous incarnation, the UEFA Cup, Sampdoria lost 3-0 to Metalist on aggregate, losing both legs of the last-32 clash during the 2008-09 campaign. Sampdoria had to make do without the injured Giampaolo Pazzini and Angelo Palombo, but playmaker Antonio Cassano was included. It was Metalist, however, who started the brighter with Taison, their 22-year-old Brazilian signing from Internacionale earlier this year, bringing two saves from goalkeeper Gianluca Curci and then having a shot blocked. The Brazilian's energy saw Sampdoria defender Fabrizio Cacciatore become the first player in the referee's notebook. But it was Sampdoria who took the lead against the run of play when 21-year-old midfielder Vladimir Koman, a Hungarian who was born in the Ukraine, found the net after 32 minutes. Metalist came straight back, causing the Italians problems with their direct approach. And they were level following a hectic 60 seconds after 38 minutes. First Cassano went close for Sampdoria with a free-kick, bringing a fine save from goalkeeper Vladimir Disljenkovic. And then Metalist went straight up the other end, where manager Miron Markevich saw Taison slot the equaliser. That was the best of Taison. The worst came after 56 minutes when the Brazilian was dismissed following a tangle with Sampdoria defender Massimo Volta. Samp swept forward in a bid to cash in on their numerical advantage but it was Metalist who dug in and broke out after 73 minutes to win a corner, off which Xavier slotted home the winner.
