Match Report

Manchester United have the opportunity to turn the tables on Chelsea and pile the pressure on their nearest title challengers at the weekend.

United take on West Ham at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime knowing victory will move them three points clear at the top of the table.

Chelsea are not in action until Monday afternoon at Newcastle United, so a three-point haul at Old Trafford would provide a massive psychological boost ahead of the final round of Premier League fixtures.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side provided the perfect midweek response to their critics who suggested a loss of form at the vital time would cost them any chance of silverware this season.

Tuesday's Champions League semi-final victory over Barcelona set-up a final meeting with Chelsea in Moscow and banished the memories of last weekend's 2-1 league defeat to the Blues.

Ferguson rotated his squad at Stamford Bridge and United saw their lead at the top of the table whittled away on the back of a second game without a win.

However, confidence at Old Trafford is again sky high following Paul Scholes' stunning midweek winner, while the week has also brought some positive injury news.

Ferguson believes both Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic could be fit to face the Hammers after missing the Barcelona game with hip and head injuries respectively.

Left-back Patrice Evra is also expected to be fit despite being stretchered off with a head injury in the closing stages.

But the veteran Scot will be concerned by a dismal recent record against West Ham which has seen his side lose on each of their three meetings.

The Hammers were 2-1 victors at Upton Park back in December, while Carlos Tevez's 45th minute winner in 1-0 success at Old Trafford last season and a similar result on home soil completed a rare league double for the London club.

But Tevez is now in the United ranks and the in-form Argentinian is likely to start against his former club with Rooney only fit enough for the bench.

West Ham manager Alan Curbishley will again take a roll call before naming his squad to travel up to Manchester.

Up to ten first-team players, including James Collins, Anton Ferdinand, Matthew Upson, Danny Gabbidon, Lee Bowyer, Kieron Dyer, Matthew Etherington and Craig Bellamy, are all unavailable.

But despite their injury problems, the Hammers have consolidated tenth place in the table in recent weeks and arrive at Old Trafford unbeaten in their last two games.

Last weekend's 2-2 draw with Newcastle United saw a welcome return to the scoresheet for Dean Ashton and Mark Noble.

However, the Hammers have kept only one clean sheet in their last nine league games and are unlikely to improve that record against a rampant United side.
