The two teams are currently locked together on 18 Championships but, whereas United have won 11 of the last 17 titles, Liverpool's last success was 20 years ago.
However, Rafa Benitez's side have had an uncanny knack of shocking United in the last few years, most notably 12 months ago when they came from behind to win 4-1 at Old Trafford, although that only proved to be a blip as Ferguson's team went on to win their third successive title.
Although the Premier League has been a distant dream for Liverpool since the opening weeks of the campaign, they remain in the hunt for a top-four place despite some horrendous results and returned to winning ways on Monday when they thrashed hapless Portsmouth 4-1 at Anfield.
However, their away form has been wretched all season with Benitez's cautious team winning only four of their 15 away games, netting only 12 times in the process.
Their last league win away from Anfield came at Aston Villa in December but, since the turn of the year, they have failed to win five matches on their travels.
