Match Report

Manchester United return to domestic action nine days after their first league defeat since August when they host Fulham on Monday night.

Their 1-0 defeat at Bolton last Saturday was United's third loss of the season, giving Arsenal - still unbeaten - a three-point lead at the top of the table with a game in hand.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson was outspoken in his belief that referee Mark Clattenburg was to blame for the result, having failed to punish Bolton's "aggressive" tactics.

"You expect a team near the bottom to battle, scrap and fight. The key thing is how the referee controls it. He is the arbiter in terms of the application of the rules of football," Ferguson said after the match.

His comments have brought about FA charges of using abusive and insulting words to an official - crimes which saw him sent to the stands for the second half last weekend.

Two key absentees from that match were back in action on Tuesday in the 2-1 Champions League win over Sp Lisbon.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Nemanja Vidic had thigh and back injuries respectively but both looked to be fully fit midweek and the pair should now start against Fulham.

Wayne Rooney is on the road to recovery from his ankle problem and early predictions suggest he could return for the visit of the Cottagers.

Fulham's injury crisis is beginning to ease, as Moritz Volz, Philippe Christanval and Ian Pearce return to training and could even compete for a spot against the champions.

Kasey Keller, Jimmy Bullard and Brian McBride are the other first team players out injured, although all three are looking to return to the side before Christmas.

Manager Lawrie Sanchez was upbeat after the 2-2 draw with Blackburn last weekend - their third draw in five games.

That result left them top of the bottom half of the league, but only three points above the relegation zone.

Despite this, Sanchez insisted: "We will be alright. We are 12th in the table and there are eight other teams worse than us."
