Match Preview
Manchester United will be hoping they can follow up their fantastic midweek Champions League victory against Wolfsburg in Germany with another success against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Sir Alex Ferguson's patched-up side's stoic effort enabled them to clinch top place in the group after they had previously confirmed their passage into the knockout stage of the competition.
Michael Owen's match-winning hat-trick will boost his confidence no end and it will be interesting to see how the diminutive frontman gets on in the coming weeks as he looks to impress England manager Fabio Capello ahead of next summer's World Cup finals.
What was more remarkable about the win was the fact that the Red Devils were without a number of regular first-team defenders.
Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, John O'Shea, Wes Brown, Jonny Evans, Fabio and Gary Neville all missed the game through injury or illness and, with Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher slotting into the heart of the defence, the side had a very different look to it.
Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney also missed the game but they could be fit for the clash with Martin O'Neill's men.
A win for the hosts would put pressure on Chelsea at the top of the table, as the Blues are now only two points ahead of the reigning champions.
Villa sit fifth in the table and are just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth and final Champions League qualification place.
If United are forced to field another depleted defence this weekend, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, John Carew and James Milner will be capable of pouncing and grabbing a result for the Midlands side and, with just one defeat in their last 11 fixtures, they should be confident regardless of Fergie's team selection.
O'Neill will still be without long-term absentees Wilfred Bouma (ankle) and Curtis Davies (dislocated shoulder).
Last season, United claimed a late energy-sapping 3-2 win against the unlucky Villains at Old Trafford.
Cristiano Ronaldo had opened the scoring with a free-kick before headers by Carew and Agbonlahor stunned the home faithful.

Match Report
Aston Villa finally laid to rest the ghost of Manchester United victories past as Gabriel Agbonlahor's first-half goal gave them their first win at Old Trafford in almost 27 years.
Villa had gone 24 games against the Reds in any competition without a win, but the way their players celebrated at the end suggested they know they are not far away from breaking into that elite group of four clubs at the top of the Premier League.
Villa hassled United from the start. They never let them settle and capitalised on some poor defending for the only goal of the game after 21 minutes.
Standing a few feet short of the left corner of the United box, Agbonlahor held off a challenge from Nemanja Vidic to lay the ball back to Ashley Young on the wing.
Young looked up and produced a perfect measured cross as Agbonlahor continued his run in between Vidic and Wes Brown to meet the ball and plant his near-post header into the net from six yards.
United pressed forward and few people would have thought that would have been the end of the scoring.
Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney missed chances, while Rooney was rightly booked for diving after going down in the Villa box after brushing Luke Young.
Rooney was unlucky not to equalise from an exquisite piece of skill on the half hour.
Patrice Evra found the England man on the left side of the six-yard box. His clever drag-back left Carlos Cuellar for dead and Rooney lashed in a shot which crashed back into play off the underside of the bar.
United went for broke after the break when both Michael Owen and Dimitar Berbatov were brought on to give Rooney much needed support up front.
As time went on the signs were there that United would make one of their late great escapes.
But even when the Reds managed to get past the Villa defenders, they found their old nemesis Brad Friedel in superb form in the Villa goal.
With four minutes left, Berbatov produced a glorious bit of skill to glide forward and power in a shot from just inside the Villa penalty area which Friedel brilliantly turned behind.
Villa's win takes them to third place in the table and with victories against United, Chelsea and Liverpool, suggests they could finally be there to stay.
