Match Preview

Tevez should star for club and country - Mancini Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini wants Carlos Tevez to carry on playing for Argentina even though the striker was hurt on international duty. Tevez suffered a knock during the victory against Spain in a friendly in midweek and is doubtful for the Barclays Premier League match with Blackburn. The club captain indicated he might retire from Argentina but Mancini said: "It is important that a fantastic player like Carlos plays for Manchester City and the national team. The national team is always important. "Would I mind if he carried on? No. But sometimes I would like Carlos and all players to stay here during the break. It is difficult when they re-start. "The problem for me, like other managers, is that we have had players away on international duty. We work for two weeks with three players. It has been difficult." Mancini is of the school of thought that would like to see international friendlies in August scrapped for a start. "Yes I agree with this because it is incredible," he said. "After the World Cup some players came back but only stayed for three days. "They did not train then they had a game with their national team. It is impossible for the players." However Mancini was delighted that six City players finished England's Euro 2012 qualifier against Switzerland in Basle. Goalkeeper Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott, Gareth Barry, James Milner, Adam Johnson and Shaun-Wright Phillips all played a part in the 3-1 victory. Mancini said: "I was very proud. It is a fantastic thing for the club to have six players in the England team. It is an incredible situation for us. "I think all our players did well and England played a good game against Switzerland. They have young players, who can play for long time." Full back Micah Richards is in contention for a place against Blackburn after shrugging off a chest infection that caused him to drop out of the England Under-21 squad. Meanwhile, Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce believes nothing is out of reach for City if Mancini succeeds in getting the best out of his players. New Blackburn signing Benjani Mwaruwari, who was released by City this summer, was critical of his former club last week, claiming there is no trust and that some of the players are motivated primarily by money. Allardyce, meanwhile, used the examples of Kenny Dalglish guiding Blackburn to the Premier League title in 1995 and Chelsea's success under Jose Mourinho as managers who have used financial clout to bring great rewards. The Rovers manager said: "Those are his (Benjani's) words and he's been in the middle of it. If that is the case then as a manager you've got to take control of that and make sure it reverses into a thriving football club of great quality. "If he (Mancini) gets it right, as Jose got it right for Chelsea after the huge amount of spending that Roman (Abramovich) did, and if you look back here with Kenny, he got it right and Blackburn won the Premier League. "You can buy a league now, obviously Blackburn have proven that, Chelsea have proven that, and you can do it in a short period of time. If you manage the players right and get that team spirit right, then you'll win anything." Rovers' forward ranks have been boosted not just by the arrival of Benjani but also the return to the squad of Jason Roberts, who has resolved his differences with Allardyce after failing to secure a move away. They could both play, but Keith Andrews (groin) is out and Martin Olsson (shoulder) doubtful.

Match Report

Robinson thwarts City Blackburn goalkeeper Paul Robinson kept Manchester City at bay and left Roberto Mancini's ambitious side having to settle for a point from a 1-1 draw at Eastlands. Having retired from England duty Robinson is intent on doing his best for Rovers, and he showed Fabio Capello what he is missing after making a string of superb saves. The only time he was beaten was in the 55th minute when Patrick Vieira equalised for City after Nikola Kalinic had opened the scoring. That effort came following a mix-up between England goalkeeper Joe Hart and Kolo Toure. The irony would surely not have been lost on Robinson. City almost made the breakthrough after two minutes with a flowing move. James Milner fed the ball out to Adam Johnson and he cut inside at pace before unleashing a shot that Robinson did well to block. They maintained the momentum and Carlos Tevez released Shaun Wright-Phillips only for the midfielder to drill his effort wide. Then Tevez tested Robinson and Johnson found the wrong side of the post after he was sent clear by Milner as he tried to curl the ball beyond the goalkeeper. City kept up the pressure and Johnson floated in an inswinging corner in the 23rd minute but Vincent Kompany's effort was deflected to safety. A minute later Blackburn went ahead after the mix up involving Joe Hart and Kolo Toure following a long ball from Morten Gamst Pedersen. Kalinic took advantage for a simple tap-in. And they came close to extending their lead in the 30th minute when Michel Salgado chipped the ball into the path of Mame Biram Diouf. The on-loan striker was slightly off balance and scuffed a shot wide from a good position. Play switched back down the other end and Wright-Phillips rattled in a shot that Robinson was equal to. Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce was forced to make a change on the 40th minute with skipper Ryan Nelsen coming off. He was in some discomfort following a challenge and replaced by Martin Olsson. He came on at full-back with Gael Givet switching to the middle to partner Chris Samba. City launched a swift counter-attack in the 54th minute when Tevez sent Johnson clear. He thumped in a shot but Robinson stood tall to make the block. A minute later they drew level after Vieira and Tevez played a neat one-two. Blackburn failed to pick up Vieira as he broke forward and it was a sweet finish by the former Inter Milan and Arsenal midfielder. It was only Vieira's second goal for City after he arrived in the January transfer window - and a timely one at that. Tevez then twice got into good positions in quick succession, only to see both shots from inside the area cleared to safety. Blackburn were pinned back again and Robinson continued his good work by turning away a powerful shot from substitute Gareth Barry. Jo then saw a shot blocked while Tevez failed to test Robinson from close range. Blackburn were dangerous on the break and Kalinic forced a brave save from Hart inside the six yard area in the 80th minute. Back came City and Robinson again to the rescue two minutes from time as he took the ball off Kolo Toure's toes. Then Tevez saw his effort blocked by Givet in stoppage time and the rebound fell to Jo but his shot was blocked as Samba threw his body in the way.
