Aston Villa will face Manchester City this Sunday, just two weeks after their biggest win of the season against Chelsea. That 2-0 victory was their third in a row and the West Midlands outfit will look to come storming back from the international break against a City side they've beaten just three times in ten years. Not that Villa will recognise much about this Manchester City team, whose most important newcomer has been in the news for all the wrong reasons over the past week. Their new owner, former Thai premier Thaksin Shinawatra, has issued with a second set of arrest warrants in relation to a police inquiry into alleged violations of stock-trading laws. His baggage hasn't had an effect on the team so far, they've won four of six competitive games this season. However, the two losses have come in their last two Premier League games, to Arsenal and Blackburn Rovers. Despite only going down 1-0 to Rovers two weeks ago, they were thoroughly out-played and even manager Sven-Goran Eriksson found positives hard to come by, saying: "We passed the ball nicely, but we were nice without ever being dangerous." The sending-off of defender Richard Dunne in that match will see him miss the clash with Villa, but they have better news on the injury front. Only Daniel Sturridge and Valeri Bojinov, out with long-term leg and knee problems, are absent and the international break has had a minimal effect. Midfielder Stephen Ireland missed the Republic of Ireland's midweek game in the Czech Republic due to a family bereavement but will return on Sunday. Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill has had to spend the international break waking up to almost daily news reports of unhappiness within his dressing room. First Shaun Maloney, who signed from Celtic less than nine months ago, suggested that he has considered leaving the club to find regular first-team football. Soon after, goalkeeper Thomas Sorenson was reported as saying: "In case I don't play any more at Aston Villa, I am willing to accept a salary reduction to find the right club." Then, some days later, he stepped in the stop further speculation. "The stories make me look like I've given up and I'm not willing to fight for my place. That's rubbish," he said. Perhaps as a result of these reports, Stiliyan Petrov, left out against Chelsea, spoke out against the culture of moaning about not playing all the time. "You won't find any complaints from me. I've never taken my place for granted nor expected to have a guaranteed place in the team," stated the Bulgarian. All of this will be endlessly frustrating for O'Neill, who received a large amount of credit for masterminding the Chelsea upset.

Teenager Michael Johnson conjured up a magical goal which defeated Aston Villa and moved Manchester City back into second place in the Premier League. After scoring a spectacular winner against Derby in the opening home league match, midfielder Johnson has this season become an indispensable figure in City's new look side. And while manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has spent £40million on fresh talent, it has been home-produced players like Johnson, Micah Richards, Nedum Onuoha and Kasper Schmeichel who have caught the eye and won many plaudits. City's finest start to the season saw Eriksson and Richards rewarded before kick-off as they received awards for being Premier League manager and player of the month for August. While this was not one of City's most impressive displays of the season, they at least displayed battling qualities to grind out a victory having lost their last two league matches. And City defended resolutely to keep a third successive clean sheet at Eastlands, where they have yet to concede a goal this season. The opening period may have been end-to-end, but neither side had a cutting edge to put the finishing touch to some enterprising play. The closest either side came to a goal came when Elano released Johnson who burst into the penalty area only for keeper Scott Carson to make a brilliant save. And it was the same Elano and Johnson combination which finally unlocked the Villa defence for City's match-winning goal shortly after the restart. Johnson took a return pass from Brazilian Elano and made a brilliant burst past three Villa players before coolly firing home from just inside the penalty area. In stoppage time, substitute Rolando Bianchi almost doubled City's winning margin after he rounded keeper Carson only to see Gareth Barry make a goalline clearance. Villa were far more livelier in attack in the second half as John Carew, Martin Laursen and Gabriel Agbonlahor all had decent attempts at goal, but none troubled keeper Schmeichel. Ashley Young also had the ball in the net but what would have been an equalising goal was ruled out for a push by Luke Moore in the build-up. It proved a frustrating afternoon for Villa whose run of three successive league and cup wins came to an end.
