Match Preview

Middlesbrough have little to cling to as they seemingly slip inexorably towards the Championship, but they can at least point to a presentable recent record against Manchester United.

Last season's Riverside Stadium clash between the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw and, in the 2005-06 campaign, Boro completed an amazing 4-1 success against Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Victory for Gareth Southgate's team, however unlikely based on recent form, would give the Teessiders a massive boost in their bid to defy the odds and beat the drop.

They must hope that United take their eye off the ball as they are in the middle of a Champions League semi-final clash with Arsenal as Ferguson attempts to clinch a second successive European title.

Goals of course have been Boro's bug-bear throughout the campaign and a tally of just 25 in 34 league matches is the main reason why they find themselves three points away from safety with only four matches of a dispiriting campaign left.

However, they have lost only four of their 17 matches at the Riverside Stadium this term but need Afonso Alves and Tuncay to get amongst the goals.

The much-criticised Brazilian has found the net only four times this season while Turkey international Tuncay, despite being feted by the Boro fans, has managed just two more.

Southgate may have to name an inexperienced defence as both Chris Riggott (ankle) and Emanuel Pogatetz (knee) once again miss out.

United' extraordinary comeback against Tottenham last weekend keeps them on course for their third successive Premier League title.

The 5-2 victory against Harry Redknapp's team was their fourth league win in a row and appeared to finally banish the memory of the back-to-back defeats against Liverpool and Fulham in mid-March.

Gary Neville and Owen Hargreaves will be United's only definite injury absentees, although Ferguson is likely to rotate his squad as he readies his team for Tuesday's Champions League return with Arsenal.

Rio Ferdinand is likely to miss out after suffering a rib injury during the closing stages of Wednesday's 1-0 first-leg European success over the Gunners, with Jonny Evans set to deputise.

Match Report

Manchester United moved a step closer to winning their third successive Premier League title with a comfortable victory at relegation-threatened Middlesbrough.

United are now in a strong position to hold off the challenge of Liverpool in the final month of the season.

They are showing their class and experience at a vital time after setbacks in March raised hopes of the title going to Merseyside.

But it now seems that it is only a matter of time before United are parading the trophy around Old Trafford once again.

There was a season's-best crowd of almost 34,000 at the Riverside Stadium that generated a terrific atmosphere at the start of the game.

Middlesbrough began with plenty of spirit but there was never any doubt of the outcome after the PFA's Player of the Year, Ryan Giggs, put United ahead midway through the first half.

Ji-Sung Park increased their lead six minutes after the break and the visitors appeared to play with plenty in reserve in the final stages of the game.

Middlesbrough, however, look set for the Championship as, once again, they had a lack of a goal threat in attack. This has been a major failing all season and manager Gareth Southgate will no doubt have a striker at the top of his shopping list in the summer.

Giggs captained United and celebrated his PFA award with a 25th-minute goal. Nemanja Vidic provided the pass and, from 20 yards, Giggs took careful aim with a left-foot shot. Brad Jones could only look on as the shot flashed into the corner of the net.

United fans were quick to taunt the home supporters with "going down, going down" chants while the Middlesbrough fans responded with "we support our local team" - a reference to their prestigious youth academy.

Middlesbrough faced a tremendous task at the start of the second half but the Giggs goal had affected their confidence and it was no surprise when Park collected a Wayne Rooney pass and left Jones helpless with a strong shot.

While United can now prepare for another league title, Middlesbrough must rebuild for the future. Chairman Steve Gibson has promised to keep faith with Southgate despite a traumatic season.

There will be, however, a player exodus with England winger Stewart Downing top of the list.
