Match Report

An improving Aston Villa side will have to face the free-flowing Manchester United side that demolished Wigan 4-0 two weeks ago.

That win took them top of the league, albeit for just one day, and seemed to signal an end to the shackled nature of play that has ground out six 1-0 wins this season.

Villa initially struggled to build on their stunning 2-0 win over Chelsea at the start of September, losing to Manchester City in the next game and crashing out of the Carling Cup at home to Leicester City.

Since then, Younes Kaboul scored a last minute equaliser in the famous 4-4 draw with Spurs, before Craig Gardner scored the only goal in the win over West Ham, leaving Villa in eighth place and full of confidence.

"We played some great football in the first half, then we saw it through and deserved to win," was how Villa boss Martin O'Neil saw the win over the Hammers.

Gardner had been the only player threatening to break up the side that beat West Ham, having withdrawn from the England Under-21s squad with a groin injury, but has declared himself fit and ready for the Red Devils.

"Man United at home is one of the biggest, if not the biggest game of the season, so I'm determined to be fit and it would be nice to be a part of the team that plays against United," Gardner told the Birmingham Mail.

United had hoped to see Gary Neville return this week, even if only for a reserve game, but he is unlikely to be fit, but Darren Fletcher has recovered from a knee injury.

The international break has apparently brought no new injuries to United and so the starting eleven that beat Wigan could remain intact, unless Edwin Van der Sar returns in goal.

Meanwhile Ryan Giggs signed a contract extension earlier this week, keeping the 33-year-old at United at least until 2009, a reward for the Manchester legend's excellent form and consistent fitness.

Man Utd have beaten Villa eleven times in a row and haven't lost a league game to them since 1995.

With Arsenal kicking off before United on Saturday, Sir Alex Ferguson's side will know whether a 12th consecutive win over Villa would take his side top of the league.
