Match Report

On present form the two best teams in the country come face-to-face on Saturday, where a win for the home side could spark the beginning of the end to the title race.

Arsenal and Manchester United are tied on 26 points going into this weekend, with just three more goals scored allowing the Gunners to sit atop of the Premier League.

With Arsenal also having a game in hand, a win on Saturday alongside a victory in that extra fixture would give the 2004 league champions a six-point lead in title battle which is already being regarded as a two-horse race.

United will point to their stunning recent record as proof that they are the favourites for this clash, while Arsenal's battle with Liverpool last Sunday could have been inspired preparation or an exhausting end to their winning run.

The Red Devils' 4-1 win over Middlesbrough last weekend broke a 100 year-old club record, giving them four straight wins with four or more goals scored in each match.

United have also now picked up the full 24 points from their last eight league games, comparable only to Arsenal's record prior to the 1-1 draw with Liverpool - the Gunners had taken 25 points from 27.

Cesc Fabregas' 80th minute goal salvaged a point for Arsenal again the Reds, although manager Arsene Wenger insisted the game meant more to his side's progress this season than the one point suggested.

"We have come out of our first big test this season stronger. We have the talent to fight up there for the championship," Wenger claimed after the match.

The Frenchman later added that Saturday's game is "another big test, but after this performance we will be facing United much stronger."

Only Robin van Persie is a definite absentee, potentially allowing Theo Walcott to play alongside Emmanuel Adebayor in the Arsenal attack.

Paul Scholes is out for around three months with damaged knee ligaments, joining Park Ji-Sung and Mikael Silvestre as long term United absentees.

Rio Ferdinand is definitely back this weekend, after a midweek scare over a groin complaint, while Gary Neville is finally fit but is unlikely to be thrown back into competitive action in such an important fixture.

Confidence does not appear to be a problem for last year's champions, as Cristiano Ronaldo proved while speaking out ahead of the crunch game.

"I believe we will win the Premier League and the Champions League this season," Ronaldo boldly stated, although he should remember that Arsenal beat United twice last season, 1-0 and 2-1.
