Match Preview

Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium could be the backdrop for Sven-Goran Eriksson's final game as Manchester City manager.

The former England head coach will reportedly be relieved of his duties after a post-season tour to Thailand with City's demanding owner Thaksin Shinawatra looking to appoint a new manager despite a relatively successful season.

That will add spice to a fixture that pits two teams with little more than pride to play for against each other on the final day of the Premier League season.

Boro's 2-0 victory over Portsmouth last weekend - their first win in five games - ended any lingering fears of relegation and moved Gareth Southgate's side up to 14th place in the table.

The confirmation of top-flight survival for another season has also led Southgate to claim that he intends to shake-up the club in the summer.

"There are lots of changes that have to happen and I'm willing to work 24 hours a day to make sure they do," he claimed. "I want to repay the chairman for keeping his nerve when lots of other clubs were changing their managers."

The Boro boss will be without Gary O'Neil (knee), Mido (groin) and Robert Huth (ankle) for the visit of City.

Mark Schwarzer could make his farewell appearance with the Australian goalkeeper's contract set to expire at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Eriksson has kept a dignified silence in recent weeks amid a storm of speculation suggesting he will be axed after just one season at the City helm.

The Swede has led the club to a top half of the table finish, but four league victories since the turn of the year and a failure to secure European football could lead to his departure.

They are guaranteed ninth place in the table and could climb two places at the weekend with a big win at the Riverside.

However, City suffered their second successive defeat with last weekend's 1-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool and afterwards Eriksson admitted his future is on shaky ground.

He said: "I expect to know what will happen after the last match. If you speak clearly to people, the situation will come out. If you do not speak clearly, it will not. We can wait a week. That is not a long time."

For the final match of the season, City are likely to be without defensive pair Micah Richards and Nedum Onouha, despite the latter returning to training in recent days following knee surgery.

Match Report

Sven-Goran Eriksson's time in charge of Manchester City has almost certainly ended with a humiliating 8-1 demolition by Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

City suffered a cruel blow when skipper Richard Dunne was sent off after just 15 minutes.

The club's inspirational defender was shown a red card after a challenge on Tuncay in the penalty area. A penalty seemed a harsh decision, but as the last man Dunne had to go.

England international Stewart Downing made no mistake from the penalty spot for his ninth goal of the season.

Without the commanding influence of the club's player of the year, City were ripped apart by a side that delighted the home crowd with a brand of fast, attacking football.

For the visitors Martin Petrov blasted a free-kick over the bar and Stephen Ireland missed his kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Boro, however, were the more dangerous and it was no surprise when record buy Afonso Alves put them further ahead after 37 minutes.

From a Fabio Rochemback pass Alves gave Andreas Isaksson no chance with a shot into a corner of the net.

Isaksson was in action again shortly before the break, going down well to save from Alves and then George Boateng, when a goal seemed certain.

Downing piled on the agony for City with a magnificent left-foot shot that left the goalkeeper helpless just before the hour mark.

Ironically, manager Gareth Southgate wrote in his programme notes "I have set Downing a target of a brace so that he can finish in double figures".

Alves, who joined Middlesbrough mid-season for a club record of £12million claimed his second goal shortly afterwards, with a powerful shot that was parried by the goalkeeper but carried on over the goal-line.

Despite the scoreline the City fans were giving their team tremendous vocal support.

Both teams introduced substitutes with Adam Johnson making a quick impact for Boro with a deflected shot that beat Isaksson.

Rochemback followed up with a terrific strike in what could be his farewell appearance for Middlesbrough. City were in complete disarray by now and went further behind at 7-0 through substitute Jeremie Aliadiere.

The visitors claimed a consolation goal through substitute Elano, but Alves hit back to complete a hat-trick and give Boro an amazing eight goals for the afternoon.

City were completely outclassed as Eriksson possibly said goodbye to the Premier League in sorry style, despite the vocal backing of the City fans and banners of support among the away followers.
