Match Preview

Manchester United have the opportunity to take a giant stride towards a third successive Premier League title on Sunday lunchtime.

However, standing between the Red Devils and three more precious points are bitter rivals Manchester City, who would like nothing more than to upset their high-profile neighbours in their own back-yard.

United will have their tails up at kick-off after booking their return to the Champions League Final following an impressive 3-1 semi-final second leg dismissal of Arsenal in midweek.

Cristiano Ronaldo looked to be back to the form of last season with a two-goal match-winning performance, while an energetic midfield quartet of Michael Carrick, Anderson, Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park totally dominated the opposition.

But as impressive as their European performance was, captain Rio Ferdinand knows that United can't afford to take City lightly.

"We haven't won anything this season," he warned. "It'll be a tough game.

"They've won their last couple of matches and are on a bit of a roll, so they'll feel they can come and do a job on us. It's up to us to make sure it doesn't happen."

Sir Alex Ferguson could recall Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes to his starting line-up should he opt for experience, while Carlos Tevez and Dimitar Berbatov may also be given the nod should he decide to rest Wayne Rooney or Ronaldo.

Only Gary Neville (groin) and Owen Hargreaves (knee) are unavailable to the champions.

Meanwhile, City head across Manchester looking to repeat the 1-0 victory of last season which ended a 34-year wait for a derby win at Old Trafford.

Under Sven-Goran Eriksson they followed that result up with a 2-1 success at Eastlands in February. However, order was restored when the sides met earlier this season and United won 1-0 despite having Ronaldo sent off for two bookable offences.

City though are certainly in form as Mark Hughes' side have risen up to eighth place in the table as three successive wins - against West Brom, Everton and Blackburn Rovers - have moved them to the brink of the European qualifying places.

"Irrespective of who we're up against on the pitch on Sunday, it's about us being positive, and we're going there in good heart and with confidence," warned former United striker Hughes.

"We've won our last four games and you have to go to Old Trafford in the belief you can get something out of it. We're in good shape."

City will have Shaun Wright-Phillips back after a five-game absence with an ankle problem.

Match Report

United won the 151st Manchester derby at a canter as Carlos Tevez gave another massive hint to the Old Trafford establishment that his heart and soul are at the club.

The 25-year-old Argentinian, who is currently waiting for a decision as to whether his two-year loan spell will end in a permanent move to United, was outstanding in a game which was well below par to the usual blood and thunder occasion.

The Red Devils were always in control as they avenged City's league double of last season with one of their own this time around.

It was Tevez who was the first United player to test Shay Given when his 25-yard drive in the fourth minute was taken at full stretch by the Citizens goalkeeper.

United took the lead after 18 minutes.

Stephen Ireland wrapped his legs around Dimitar Berbatov's legs 30 yards from goal and Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up to blast the resulting free-kick right-footed into the bottom right corner of the net, courtesy of deflections off Nigel de Jong and Given's left hand.

Tevez was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet in the 31st minute. Picking up a pass inside from Patrice Evra after his run down the left, Tevez hit a tremendous right-foot shot from the left corner of the penalty area which crashed against the City bar.

But United's first-half dominance was properly reflected when they doubled their lead in the closing seconds.

Darren Fletcher's long ball out of defence was brilliantly taken down in one movement by Berbatov 25 yards from goal.

The Bulgarian striker turned superbly and played the ball to his right for Tevez to hit a viciously curling right-foot 20-yard shot in off the right post.

The second half was an anti-climax as the game became strewn with misplaced passes and untidy play.

It could have been different had City striker Robinho not fired high and wide when well placed eight yards out in the 51st minute.

Ronaldo showed his obvious dislike being replaced by Paul Scholes in the 59th minute as he walked off.

City substitute Martin Petrov forced United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar to make his only real save of the game four minutes from time, when the Dutchman hurled himself across goal to tip behind the Bulgarian winger's fierce 30-yard shot.

But United were unlucky not to make it 3-0 in the final seconds when Darren Fletcher's header from a Wayne Rooney corner hit a City upright after the magnificent Tevez had got a faintest touch to the ball inches from the far post.
