Ronaldo fires in a free-kick from a tight angle on the left and almost beat Coupet but the French stopper tipped the shot over

United look tired and out of ideas already as Nani tries to work some magic on the left. At least they have players who can change the game

Fred will replace Benzema for Lyon

Tevez found acres of space on the left but his shot is straight at Coupet. Oh and he's offside

Brilliant skills from Benarfa who turns and beats Anderson but shoots high again

Benarfa tries his luck from 25 yards but it's well over

Tevez wins a free-kick inside Lyon's half as United push forward again but Lyon appear solid

More trouble for United as the talented Benarfa replaces Clerc on the right wing

Lyon appear to have moved their whole team back twenty yards now, with only Benzema in United's half

United are getting stuck again now, unable to get far into Lyon's half. Anderson's frustration shows as he looses possession then concedes a free-kick

Juninho comes off and is given a well deserved round of applause. Defensive midfielder Mathieu Bodmer comes on

United's subs have done the job for Ferguson, giving Man Utd a new dimension in attack. Still no end product yet though

Rooney scores but it's ruled out! Tevez's header was weak and Rooney rushed in to apply the finish but he was well offside

A very awkward shot from Juninho, one which stayed low and bounced just before it reached Van der Sar but fortunately it was aimed a foot too far wide of the right hand post

United do at least appear willing to go forward in numbers now but with no joy as yet

LYON 1 - 0 MAN UTD: BENZEMA with a stunning strike for Lyon! The striker received the ball just outside the box, spun the defenders around him and drove in a stunning low shot which beat Van der Sar at his near post

Scholes has a shot partially blocked but again Lyon don't do anything before loosing possession again

Evra and Ronaldo are linking up well early on, forcing Clerc to defend more than Lyon would like their right winger to do

Nothing comes from it but United regain possession and look the more likely to score at the moment

Van Der Sar gather easily and clears, as United attack down the left and force a corner

Evra fouls Clerc on the right flank, giving Lyon a chance to haul the ball forward

United appear happy to play slow, possession football but both sides could get more aggressive if the score stays this way for much longer

Both sides come out unchanged as United kick the second half off

The half-time whistle goes and neither side will be unhappy with an exciting, but goalless, first half

Ronaldo gets his head to Giggs' corner but he couldn't keep the header down and the ball sails harmlessly over

Giggs is fouled shortly after, giving Ronaldo a chance to show off his shooting boots. It's on target but Coupet comfortably tips the shot round the post

Ronaldo breezes past Sebastien Squillaci and into the Lyon area but the ball is cleared for a corner which Giggs wastes

United go forward with Anderson and Hargreaves but Lyon intercept and look to break

Juninho's free-kick goes disappointingly over the bar but Lyon look to have gained some momentum now

For the first time United have a decent spell but that dominance is ended by Govou who dribbles through United before being brought down

United looked dangerous for a moment down the middle but Giggs' attempted through-ball for Scholes found the Englishman offside

Another yellow card, this time to KIM KALLSTROM, for a petty foul in the middle of the park

Nothing comes from the free-kick as it's blasted high and wide

United win a free-kick 35 yards out following a foul on Ronaldo by ANTHONY REVEILLERE

The midfield battle has remained close, with neither side able to get a long period of possession

Good play from United's full-backs as first Evra and then Wes Brown gets forward. Lyon cope well though and get the ball clear

Two of Giggs' corners are headed into touch, before the third gets cleared for good

Scholes this time makes a darting run and does get onto the pass, but his shot is deflected wide for a corner

Rooney almost found himself through again following Anderson's pass but the Englishman miss-read the ball and the danger is gone

Almost disaster for Ferdinand, who attacks a weak, low cross, slicing his attempted kick towards his own goal - but the ball misses the post by a few inches

Lyon continue to pressure, getting a shot blocked on the edge of United's area

The Brazilian shoots but it was always too far out and Van Der Sar holds the ball

Benzema is causing trouble for Vidic already, winning a free-kick which Juninho will again take. 35 yards out

United build slowly forty yards from the Lyon goal but are unable to break through the French side's ranks

Wes Brown concedes a free-kick on the left flank. This could be dangerous as Juninho steps up and swings a testing ball that Ferdinand flicks out for a corner

United's midfield aren't quite as dominant as we were expecting, allowing Lyon to make some threatening inroads towards United's goal without really testing Van Der Sar yet

Ronaldo gets onto a long Ferdinand pass but his control lets him down for once and Lyon clear from inside their area

Both sides seem intent on playing on the break, with United looking the more aggressive in the early stages

Look for Hatem Benarfa to come off the bench for Lyon - the 20-year-old is one of France's hottest properties. Also important will be how Lyon cope without the regular centre-back pairing of Patrick Muller and Cleber Anderson

United will also have been pleased to see Lyon struggle against Le Mans at the weekend, loosing 1-0. After that defeat they are one point clear of Bordeaux at the top of Ligue 1

Rooney's eyes will have lit up at the sight of Jean-Alain Boumsong on the Lyon teamsheet - the 22-year-old scored three goals in two games against a Newcastle United team with Boumsong playing at centre-half!

Lyon, also champions of their domestic league, could play a similar way with Karim Benzema as the striker and Jeremy Toulalan in as the midfield linchpin

The Premiership title holders have Cristiano Ronaldo playing on the other flank, while Owen Hargreaves plays the holding role alongside Anderson and Paul Scholes in midfield. Wayne Rooney is alone upfront, with Carlos Tevez on the bench
