Liverpool take on Internazionale in a mouth-watering Champions League last 16 tie at Anfield tonight

Match Report

Two goals in the last five minutes provided a timely boost for under-pressure manager Rafael Benitez as Liverpool overcame ten-man Internazionale 2-0 at Anfield.

Benitez had come under fire after the Reds were dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship side Barnsley in a shock fifth round defeat on Saturday.

But with rumours circulating Merseyside that the Spaniard would be fired if he failed to secure the Champions League this season, his team produced the perfect response as late goals from Dirk Kuyt and Steven Gerrard shot down a disappointing Inter.

Benitez admitted to being stunned and frustrated after the cup exit, but his side were clearly up for the European night and roared out of the starting blocks.

Inter are the runaway Serie A leaders and on course for the third straight Scudetto, but they were always on the back foot following the 30th minute dismissal of Marco Materazzi.

Twice the former Everton defender was yellow-carded for pulling back Fernando Torres - the first a rather harsh caution - and he was given his marching orders on the half-hour mark.

For most of the next hour the Reds completely dominated possession and territory with Inter happy to pull nine men back behind the ball and look for lone striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to ease the pressure on the defence.

That tactic looked like working as they closest the home side came were two teasing crosses from Gerrard and Steve Finnan either side of half-time which were scrambled clear.

Julio Cesar saved what looked like being Liverpool's best chance when he tipped Torres' low shot from 18 yards around his post, after Patrick Vieira's deflected clearance inadvertently played the striker through on goal.

Vieira also escaped a penalty shout on the hour when he handled Gerrard's attempted flick as Inter rode their luck, before Torres controlled and turned in one movement before sending a curling low effort inches wide of the target soon after.

But with time running out and with Inter defensive rock Ivan Cordoba having been stretchered off after landing awkwardly, the home side finally found the breakthrough.

Substitute Jermaine Pennant swung over a deep cross which found its way to Kuyt and the Dutchman's angled drive took a deflection off Maicon, before bouncing over the wrong-footed Julio Cesar.

Five minutes later, Gerrard doubled the advantage when his low shot from just outside the box flew untouched through a sea legs of legs and past an unsighted Cesar.

The second goal was perhaps rough justice on Inter, but after a turbulent week on Merseyside, came as a welcome relief for Benitez and Liverpool.
