Match Preview

If Liverpool are to gauge their progress from last season then they need to look no further than last year's 2-2 Anfield draw with Saturday's opposition.

Hull City held the Reds to a frustrating stalemate last December in one of several home draws which an end-of-season post mortem identified as being the reason why they were unable to pip Manchester United to the Premier League title.

Anything other than a victory on Saturday will lead to suggestions that Rafael Benitez's side are not genuine title challengers this term - and that they have regressed from last season.

Twelve months on and the Reds have bounced back from a sticky start to the campaign to move up to third place in the table on the back of three successive wins.

Defeats to Aston Villa and Tottenham inside their three opening games have been forgotten and last weekend's 3-2 win at West Ham certainly highlighted the never-say-die spirit in the ranks.

Fernando Torres appears back to his best after six months of niggling hamstring injuries as the Spain striker scored twice at Upton Park.

Benitez will also be buoyed by the returns from injury of several key players, including defender Martin Skrtel, full-back Fabio Aurelio and winger Albert Riera.

The Spaniard suddenly has a much stringer looking squad at his disposal and had the luxury of resting all of his first-choice players for the Carling Cup encounter with Leeds United in midweek.

Hull boss Phil Brown would certainly take a repeat scoreline from last year's game if asked in the build-up to this encounter.

The Tigers find themselves entrenched in the bottom three after picking up just four points from the first 18 on offer to them this season.

The malaise which almost brought about their relegation last season is still lingering at the KC Stadium and Brown is finding himself under increasing pressure with each passing week.

Last Saturday they lost 1-0 to Birmingham City following a last-gasp winner and were booed off by their own fans.

"I'm not after patience from anybody, I'm after results, that's the business that we're in," admitted Brown afterwards.

"Hopefully, those results will come sooner rather than later."

Match Report

Fernando Torres bagged a hat-trick to pile more misery on beleaguered Hull City boss Phil Brown as Liverpool ran riot at Anfield.

The Spanish star was too hot to handle for the Tigers defence throughout as Rafa Benitez's men inflicted a fourth successive defeat on the visiting Tigers.

Steven Gerrard, Ryan Babel and Albert Riera also got in on the act as Liverpool took advantage of Hull's woeful defending.

Torres, who scored two goals in the 3-2 win at West Ham United last weekend, took just 12 minutes to open his account.

Winger Riera crossed from the left and Torres was left in acres of space to control the ball and slam a shot beyond the reach of Boaz Myhill.

But with the Liverpool fans expecting an avalanche of goals they were stunned three minutes later when Geovanni equalised.

Martin Skrtel failed to head clear Paul McShane's cross and the Tigers striker, who penned a new two-year deal this week, scuffed a shot beyond the reach of Jose Reina.

Lucas Leiva almost restored the lead soon afterwards only to see his shot saved by Myhill before Jan Vennegor of Hesselink blocked a Skrtel shot.

But Torres had his second in the 28th minute when he latched onto Yossi Benayoun's pass before dancing past Ibrahima Sonko and poking the ball past Myhill.

Liverpool were comfortable until the break and had the win sewn up just two minutes after the restart.

Benayoun found the Spaniard who skipped past Sonko again before firing through the legs of McShane and past Myhill for his eighth goal of the season.

Torres almost added a fourth when he headed over a Skrtel cross before Gerrard got in on the act in the 61st minute.

But only the Liverpool captain will know if he meant to score as his cross-shot flew over Myhill and crashed in off the bar.

It was five two minutes from time when Dirk Kuyt raced down the right before crossing for Babel to hammer home from close range. And there was still time for Kuyt to create more chaos when his cross was fired in, with the aid of a huge deflection, by Riera.
