Match Preview

A trip to Fulham represents a tough test for Liverpool as they seek to maintain the pressure on Manchester United in the race for the Premier League title.

The Cottagers are currently in the top half of the table and have their sights set on a possible European spot for next season.

Cottagers goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer is eyeing a victory this weekend, telling the club's official website: "We've drawn against them this season at Anfield and hopefully we can get a good result at home.

"There are eight games to go and we've got some very difficult games to come. We'll take each match as it comes, but we definitely want to finish in the top half of the table.

"If we can continue our current form over the coming games, who knows what will happen."

Manager Roy Hodgson has a fully-fit squad to choose from as his side aim to repeat the display which secured a superb 2-0 win at home to Manchester United last time out.

United's recent problems have allowed Liverpool to close to within one point of their deadly rivals, although the Red Devils do still have a game in hand.

However, momentum seems to be with Rafa Benitez's men, who demolished Aston Villa 5-0 at Anfield last time out, having secured a fabulous 4-1 victory at Old Trafford prior to that.

Those results led Liverpool stalwart Jamie Carragher to say: "We're maturing and getting used to the demands of fighting for a title.

"We were there earlier in the season but, having not been in that position before, maybe we didn't know how to deal with it. We've probably found it difficult a few times this season to cope with that.

"We're well aware that the title is in Manchester United's hands, but we're trying to put them under as much pressure as possible."

Match Report

Yossi Benayoun struck a dramatic late winner at Fulham to knock Manchester United off the top of the Premier League table and keep Liverpool's title challenge on track.

The Reds had endured a frustrating afternoon against a determined home side and looked set to miss out on all three points, until Benayoun fired home from close range to add yet another twist to the title race.

Liverpool are now two points clear of United and although they have played two games more, Rafa Benitez will believe his men can end their 19-year wait for a league title.

It looked as if Liverpool would be made to rue a number of missed chances, but with time running out, Benayoun popped up at the first post to lash a stunning effort past the outstretched arm of Mark Schwarzer.

Liverpool should have been at least four goals ahead at the break, but the Fulham goal lived a charm life with the woodwork coming to their rescue on four separate occasions.

Schwarzer had already pulled off a wonder save to deny Andrea Dossena, before the Italian smashed a header against the crossbar after connecting with Martin Skrtel's shot.

The visitors continued to pile on the pressure with Benitez's men hitting the frame of the goal three times in four mad minutes.

First, Xabi Alonso's rasping 30-yard volley smashed against the crossbar with Schwarzer beaten, before Fernando Torres raced clear only to thunder a shot against the base of the post.

Dossena was next to go close, this time directing a thumping header against the bar after Steven Gerrard's inch-perfect cross found the defender all alone in the Fulham penalty area.

Liverpool must have wondered how they had failed to make the breakthrough and they were further frustrated in the second half as Fulham refused to buckle.

Ryan Babel, a second-half substitute, saw his fierce effort hacked off the line by John Paintsil as Liverpool increased the tempo, while Gerrard's cross-cum-shot was deflected just past the post by team-mate Benayoun.

The Reds poured forward in the dying minutes and when Gerrard's pass was deflected into the path of Benayoun, the Israeli showed composure to smash home a deserved winner.
