Match Preview

Rami missing for Lille Two European table-toppers do battle in the Europa League on Thursday night as French pacesetters Lille play host to Dutch counterparts PSV Eindhoven. The match is arguably the glamour tie of the last 32 and is sure to be a keenly-fought affair between two sides brim-full full of confidence. Hosts Lille in particular have reason to be bullish, boasting as they do a 13-game unbeaten run in Ligue 1 that has seen them pull five points clear at the summit. Their form in reaching the Europa League knockout stage was rather more patchy, however, with two wins, two draws and two losses seeing Rudi Garcia's men squeeze through as Group C runners-up by a point from Gent and Levski Sofia. Their record at home is traditionally good, with seven wins from their last eight European games at Stade Lille-Metropole. Their only reverse in that sequence came with a 2-1 loss to Sporting Lisbon in this season's group phase. Lille have suffered a blow ahead of the game with the new that influential defender Adil Rami will miss Thursday's first leg due to an ankle injury sustained in his side's 2-0 win against Toulouse on Sunday. The France international, who last month agreed a summer move to Spanish outfit Valencia, requires further scans but will be hopeful of making his return in time to feature in the return leg at Philips Stadion on February 24. Fred Rutten's PSV go into Thursday's game on a run of four wins in their last five in the league, and boasting a solid record on their travels in European competition this season. The Dutch side qualified convincingly from Group I after four wins and two draws from their six games. They won all three of their away games in the group, against Metalist Kharkiv, Sampdoria and Debrecen, scoring at least two goals in the process in each. The match is PSV's 100th in this competition, and on Thursday night they will be bidding to seal an impressive one-in-two success rate with their 50th victory.

Match Report

PSV in control after late showing PSV Eindhoven stunned Lille with two late goals in a minute to salvage a 2-2 draw in a Europa League battle of two table-topping sides. The Ligue 1 leaders went ahead through Idrissa Gueye after six minutes when Andreas Isaksson failed to deal with a corner, then Tulio De Melo doubled the lead just after the half-hour mark. Having offered little for most of the game, PSV then struck back with two goals seemingly from nowhere - Wilfred Bouma netting in the 84th minute and Ola Toivonen completing the comeback 64 seconds later. From having looked out of the match, it left PSV with the upper hand going into the second leg of their last-32 tie. The writing looked to be on the wall for the Eredivisie leaders as early as the sixth minute when Lille took the lead. Isaksson came for Ludovic Obraniak's corner but could only parry, and Gueye finished from the edge of the box. Pierre-Alain Frau and Emerson both went wide as Lille pressed for a second, with their visitors struggling to establish themselves in the game. The second duly arrived in the 31st minute in simple fashion as De Melo nodded home Mathieu Debuchy's right-wing cross from close range. PSV finally fashioned a chance four minutes before the break and arguably Marcus Berg should have taken it, but his close-range effort was turned behind by Mickael Landreau. The French dominance continued after the restart, as first Aurelien Chedjou and then Stephane Dumont sent strikes from distance wide. Frau was next to try his luck, again missing the target, before Berg had another go at the other end. He at least worked Landreau, though it was a comfortable save. Chances became few and far between as the final whistle drew nearer, though Isaksson was called into action to turn a long-range free-kick from Yohan Cabaye behind after Francisco Rodriguez had fouled De Melo. But from nowhere, with the game seemingly drifting to its conclusion, PSV launched a comeback. First Bouma reacted to convert from close range after Toivonen's shot from the edge of the box hit the bar. Then the Swede got on the scoresheet himself with a low finish from 18 yards to leave the home fans stunned.
