Match Report

Charlton Athletic kept up their impressive start to the season with a workmanlike victory against Leicester City at The Valley to confirm their position as promotion favourites even at this early stage.

Two goals in the first 23 minutes were enough to give Charlton the points and their second successive home victory in five days against a Leicester side who never really troubled the Londoners.

On the evidence of this performance, new manager Gary Megson has work to do to get the Midlands side playing as he wants.

They did in fact have the first shot of the game when skipper Steve Clemence saw his effort turned away for a corner by Charlton keeper Nicky Weaver.

But poor defending allowed Charlton to get their noses in front when a long cross from full-bank Danny Mills was headed goalwards by Zhi Zheng and Chris Iwelumo scored from close range.

Mills was involved in Charlton's second goal as this time Iwelumo headed a cross past a static Leicester defence and Luke Varney rifled his first goal for the home side since his summer move from Crewe.

Just before the break, Leicester striker Matt Fryatt forced Weaver into another save.

Leicester made two substitutions at the break by bringing on Bruno N'Gotty and former Charlton player Radostin Kishishev and he soon got into the game with a long-range shot that was well saved.

With Charlton mainly in control of the game there were few more chances as the home side took their foot off the pedal.

Leicester simply didn't have enough to worry the home defence, whose early season form is certainly very encouraging.
