Match Report

Late goal specialists Leeds United did it again with a last-minute point-saver at Hartlepool United in a game they looked like losing.

Behind for more than an hour, Leeds had been hassled out of any sort of form by a Hartlepool team that closed them down in all areas.

Jermaine Beckford was the Leeds hero with his 14th goal of the season and, after a below-par performance, it was definitely a case of a point saved rather then two points lost.

The consolation for Leeds was that they got a result without playing well, while Hartlepool raised their game and can take a lot from a top performance.

Pools went in front on 21 minutes when ex-Leeds left-back Robbie Elliott clipped a great free-kick over to the far post where fellow defender Michael Nelson powered in a downward header.

Another former Leeds player, Ian Moore, blasted a shot over the bar from the edge of the area as the visitors were penned back.

In the second half Moore went close again when Leeds keeper Casper Ankergren finger-tipped an angled shot against his right-hand post and behind for a corner.

Leeds were subdued in attack, although Tresor Kandol's shot hit the side-netting in the first half, when home keeper Jan Budtz had saved a Beckford shot with his feet.

They might have been desperate at times, but Leeds stayed in the game and got their reward in the last minute when a long clearance found Beckford wide on the left.

He cut inside before hammering a low angled shot across Budtz and just inside the far post for a dramatic last-ditch equaliser.

Gary Liddle led Hartlepool's challenge with a busy display in midfield, where Leeds were never able to settle down and could not even think about playing any flowing football.
