Match Preview

Pepe - It`s a big game Juventus defender Simone Pepe has pressed home to his team-mates the importance of the Europa League Group A clash with Salzburg. Both teams head into the game at Turin's Stadio Olimpico searching for their first win in the competition after three failed attempts. The Italians sit third in the pool after three straight draws while Salzburg are bottom of the standings with one point collected so far. Salzburg held Juve to a 1-1 draw when the two sides met last month in Austria but Pepe is aware anything less than a win this time around would seriously harm their chances of reaching the knockout stage. "This is a decisive match, crucial to our hopes of qualification," said Pepe. "It is undoubtedly a match within our reach and I'm sure our fans will help us." Luigi Del Neri's Juve head into the fixture inspired by Saturday's 2-1 victory at AC Milan which lifted them to fourth in Serie A. "Saturday's win has given us another boost in confidence," said Pepe. "But we now need to show that form in Europe. "So far we have taken three draws but we need a win in order to progress in the Europa League." Del Neri will be forced to make some changes to his starting XI with his team decimated by injuries. Winger Jorge Martinez will be sidelined until the new year with a foot injury while full-back Paolo De Ceglie is out for several months with a knee problem. Goalkeeper Alex Manninger is also sidelined for a month with an ankle injury. "We know we have so many players out injured," said Pepe. "But I'm sure whoever goes out on the pitch will do a good job." Salzburg were held to a 1-1 draw by Rapid Vienna at the weekend and lie fifth in the Austrian Bundesliga. Salzburg coach Huub Stevens expects a difficult encounter in Turin, saying: "Juve would love to win, and almost need to win if they are to qualify. "They need to beat us and will play to do so. "They are a top-class team and we need to be at our absolute best to take anything back. "If we take a point in Turin that is very good, but it is too little for us."

Match Report

Stalemate for Juve Juventus were held to a goalless draw by Europa League Group A basement team Salzburg in Turin. The Italians were the better team in the first half but were denied by some fine saves from Gerhard Tremmel. The Austrians showed more determination after the re-start but failed to make the most of their chances. The result will be of little comfort for Juventus coach Luigi Del Neri, whose side are winless after recording their fourth consecutive draw in the competition. The Italians stand third in the group, three points behind joint leaders Manchester City and Lech Poznan with two games remaining. Lech Poznan beat City 3-1 in the other group game. Salzburg lie at the foot of the pool with two points from four games. Both teams headed into the encounter at the Stadio Olimpico searching for their first win in the competition. The hosts enjoyed a strong start and Alessandro Del Piero was first to test Tremmel with his effort from outside the area. The Salzburg goalkeeper dived to his right to clear the danger. Midway through the first half, Gonzalo Zarate fed Nikola Pokrivac and his 20-yard strike was met by a fine save from Juventus goalkeeper Marco Storari. Nicola Legrottaglie should have put Juventus in front on the half-hour mark but his powerful header from a corner-kick went off target. Juventus missed another good chance to take the lead before half-time when Milos Krasic served Del Piero and he fired over the bar from the heart of the area. Salzburg almost broke the deadlock early in the second half. Franz Schiemer's close-range header from Jakob Jantscher's cross from the right went just wide of the far post. Shortly after, Tremmel was forced to parry away Mohammed Sissoko's bullet strike from 30 yards. The visitors pressed forward more aggressively and should have been rewarded after the hour mark. Roman Wallner nodded wide from Christian Schwegler's dangerous cross. With 10 minutes remaining, Del Piero's right-footed strike from 15 yards forced Tremmel to fully stretch to clear in what was Juve's last chance of the encounter.
