Match Report

Scotland were given a reality check by Italy at the top of their Euro 2008 qualifying group on a soggy night in Bari.

The world champions ripped Scotland to shreds at times and the final scoreline hardly did them justice in a timid performance from Alex McLeish's side.

An early, headed goal from Luca Toni had the Scots on the back foot and gave the Italians confidence to control the game and Toni sealed the points with his second 20 minutes from time.

Hibernian midfield player Scott Brown was given his first start for Scotland but it was a difficult game for him to exert any influence.

Italy went ahead after just 11 minutes when Steve McManus failed to pick up Toni at a Massimo Oddo free-kick and the striker scored with a near-post header.

Scotland were left chasing shadows for much of the first half but Craig Gordon was not seriously troubled for the rest of the half.

Lee McCulloch had Scotland's first attempt on goal after 32 minutes with a snap-shot from 25 yards but Gianluigi Buffon saved comfortably.

Scotland finished the first half well. McCulloch was just a yard away from connecting with a Miller cut-back and then the Celtic striker had a chance in the final seconds.

Gary Naysmith's cross from the right was inch-perfect but Miller could not make proper contact in front of goal and nudged an unconvincing header well wide.

A one-handed save from Gordon kept the Italians from doubling their lead at the start of the second half when Mauro Camoranesi sent Antonio Di Natale clear.

Gordon denied the Italian striker again moments later as he saved with his left foot after more good work from Camoranesi.

It was one-way traffic. Toni headed wide after slick build-up play and then shot straight at Gordon after fine play by Antonio Di Natale.

The second goal came after 70 minutes when Toni headed a simple goal at the back post from Camoranesi's cross.

It was enough for Italy and they seemed satisfied to see out the remainder of the game.
