Match Preview

Juande Ramos will again come under the spotlight as his out-of-sorts Spurs side entertains a Hull City outfit full of confidence.

The Spanish coach came under fire for the first time from supporters during last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Portsmouth following the north London club's worst start to a season in 53 years.

Tottenham are currently rock bottom of the Premier League table despite spending more than £50million on new recruits during the summer.

Ramos' side have failed to win any of their six opening league games and the knives are beginning to be sharpened for the former Sevilla boss.

Failure to beat a team that came up through the Championship play-offs last season is virtually unthinkable for a side that harboured hopes of breaking into the top four before the campaign kicked off.

However, their failure to replace free-scoring strikers Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane during the transfer window has left a huge hole in their attack, with Darren Bent likely to return to the starting line-up on Sunday.

The likes of Luka Modric, Aaron Lennon, Giovani Dos Santos and Tom Huddlestone couldd step up off the bench as Spurs look to kick-start a dismal season into some sort of life.

Brazilian full-back Gilberto and Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko could be two of the fall guys from last week's starting line-up.

Hull City have no such problems as they make a return journey to north London eight days after taking the surprise scalp of Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium.

Geovanni's 30-yard stunner and a headed winner from Daniel Cousin secured three more points for the Tigers and moved them up to sixth place in the table.

Phil Brown's side have already exceeded many people's predictions this season and their success appears to be built on a combination of hard work and a sprinkling of attacking flair.

Only once this season have they been found lacking - in last month's 5-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan Athletic - and Hull have already amassed the same amount of points that hapless Derby County managed during 38 games last term.

Match Report

Juande Ramos faces an anxious wait to see if he will remain as Tottenham manager after Geovanni scored another wonder goal in north London to leave Spurs rooted to the foot of the Premier League.

Spurs have now suffered their worst start to a campaign since 1912 and Ramos will fear for his job at White Hart Lane after seeing his side pick up just two points from their opening seven league games.

After spending nearly £70million on new players during the summer, the Tottenham players have looked well below their best and have been rocked by the departures of Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.

In contrast, newly promoted Hull City are enjoying every minute of being in the Premier League and are writing a fairytale story of their own following their memorable 2-1 win over Arsenal just a week ago.

You could sense the anxiety among the home supporters from the start of the game, but it could have been a different story if Gareth Bale had broken the deadlock within the opening 60 seconds.

The Welsh defender broke clear in the box and saw his shot cleared off the line by Hull defender Andy Dawson.

Hull had a golden chance to open the scoring on three minutes. Daniel Cousin played the ball into Geovanni who cut inside Jonathan Woodgate and with just Heurelho Gomes to beat he fired the ball over the bar.

This was never going to be a dull affair and Tottenham came close again 60 seconds later when Aaron Lennon cross caused all kinds of problems for the Hull defence.

The ball eventually broke free to Roman Pavlyuchenko, who directed his shot straight at Hull keeper Boaz Myhill.

There must be something in the north London air which makes Hull play at their best and, in particular, Geovanni.

No-one will forget his stunning strike against Arsenal last week and the Brazilian midfielder tried to match that with another spectacular goal on seven minutes when he fired an unstoppable right-foot free-kick which sailed past Gomes into the top left-hand corner.

Tottenham tried everything to get themselves back into the game. Jermaine Jenas played a quick free-kick into the path of Fraizer Campbell on 15 minutes who drilled his shot just past the post.

Bale then fired a 30-yard free-kick on 21 minutes which produced a stunning save from Myhill who tipped the ball onto the bar.

Ramos must have been praying this was the day when his new signings were finally going to show their potential, but the misery just continued for Pavlyuchenko who was forced to leave the field through injury on 34 minutes.

Hull should have doubled their lead on 36 minutes when George Boateng laid the ball in to Dean Marney, who fired a superb shot on the turn, but saw his effort cannon back off the post with Gomes well and truly beaten.

Tottenham also hit the woodwork on 42 minutes. Lennon played the ball back for Woodgate, whose shot deflected off Michael Turner and came back off the post.

Ramos must have said some strong words to his players at the half-time interval as they looked far more energetic in the second half.

Substitute Darren Bent was determined to make an impact and came within a whisker of putting his side back on level terms on 57 minutes.

Luka Modric played a high ball over the top of the Hull defence. Bent reacted the quickest and lifted the ball over Myhill, but his shot went inches past the post.

Hull should have put the game beyond Tottenham on 73 minutes when Marlon King broke clear of the defence, but saw his shot kept out by the legs of Gomes, but Phil Brown's side held on to help them go third in the Premier League.
