Tranmere Rovers, after a run of home draws, finally secured their third victory in front of their own fans to go back to the top of Coca Cola League One.

Industrious midfielder Paul McLaren set them on their way with his first goal of the season - only his second for the club.

Both sides huffed and puffed to little avail in the opening exchanges. Danny Cadamarteri was wide with a fourth minute strike for Huddersfield and at the other end McLaren was well off target from 25 yards.

Soon afterwards it needed a great saving tackle by Joe Skarz to deny Chris Greenacre in front of a gaping goal.

Town could find no end product for some good approach work with Andy Holdsworth not testing keeper Danny Coyne after one of their best moves in the 20th minute.

Tranmere could have been ahead five minutes later but Greenacre put his shot across the face of goal when he should have done better from an opening created by McLaren.

The Merseysiders did not have to wait much longer for a goal, with McLaren driving home into the left corner on 29 minutes when Gareth Taylor headed down a long ball from Ian Goodison.Antony Kay saw a powerful shot saved at the second attempt by Matt Glennon, who did well to push over a goal-bound shot by Greenacre five minutes before the break.

An outstretched leg by Glennon denied McLaren a second home goal soon after the re-start but Rovers doubled their advantage on 53 minutes, with Shane Sherriff heading in at the far post from a deflected corner by McLaren.

Huddersfield sent on Danny Broadbent after 71 minutes to try to bring new life to the side. Moments later Holdsworth put a good effort just over and Luke Beckett headed over the bar following a corner.

Taylor headed Tranmere's third from another McLaren corner on 83 minutes, rounding off a dominant team performance.
