Match Preview

Fenlon excited by Gers clash Hibernian manager Pat Fenlon is relishing making his Easter Road debut on Saturday, with the excitement of the occasion heightened by the visit of Clydesdale Bank Premier League leaders Rangers. Former Bohemians boss Fenlon's debut as Hibs boss was cut short when last Friday's SPL clash at Motherwell abandoned at half-time due to a fire. Hibs were leading 1-0 against the third-placed side and Fenlon is now eager to tackle SPL leaders and defending champions Rangers as he takes charge in Leith for the first time. The Irishman told Hibernian TV: "I'm looking forward to it immensely. It's fantastic to be playing at home for the first time, no matter who it is against, but this is a big one because we're playing the champions. "It makes it a little bit more special when you've got the champions coming to town. "They're a very, very good side and don't lose too many games and drop too many points. "We're going to have to be at our best to get something out of it. "It will be a great boost for everybody if we can get a result and a performance to match that." Fenlon has a near full-strength squad to select from. Midfielder and club captain Ian Murray this week underwent a scan on his injured hip, which came back clear, but he remains out. Striker Garry O'Connor recovered from illness to play in the match at Motherwell, which was abandoned at half-time, and is fully fit. Striker Kyle Lafferty has been rated doubtful for Rangers with a back problem. There is also a question mark over defender Kyle Bartley, who has a chest infection but has a better chance of making the trip to Easter Road. Defender Carlos Bocanegra and full-back Lee Wallace are in contention after recovering from injury but winger Sone Aluko is suspended. Manager Ally McCoist has backed Aluko to bounce back after being banned for diving. Aluko will sit out the next two Clydesdale Bank Premier League games against Hibernian and Inverness after he was found guilty of simulation by the Scottish Football Association's fast track tribunal. The winger won a penalty in last weekend's meeting with Dunfermline to help Rangers secure a 2-1 win on what was only his second appearance for the Scottish champions and his Ibrox debut. He also faced criticism the previous week for being slow to react and inadvertently playing Manuel Pascali onside for the Kilmarnock goal that inflicted a first SPL defeat of the season on the Light Blues. However, despite his furious response to news of the ban, McCoist insists both he and the player were able to see the funny side of what has been a turbulent start to Aluko's Rangers career. He said: "We had a little bit of a laugh about it yesterday (Thursday), which you probably won't believe. "It was like 'Welcome to Rangers'. It's been an interesting couple of weeks for him. "I actually thought he played well down at Kilmarnock but he received a bit of stick for not coming off a post at the goal. Then the Dunfermline incident. "If he ever needed a reminder of the situation he finds himself in at our club, he's got it quickly. "He's a lovely lad and, disappointed as he is at yesterday's judgement, he will bounce back from it. He's a smashing lad and he will come back absolutely fine."

Match Report

Jelavic double downs Hibs Nikica Jelavic scored twice as Rangers claimed a 2-0 victory over Hibernian in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League. Following a poor opening 45 minutes from both sides at Easter Road, the striker converted from the penalty spot before sealing the win with his second of the day. The result meant defeat on his home debut for new Hibs manager Pat Fenlon as the Scottish champions strengthened their grasp on top spot in the SPL. Rangers made three changes from last week's win over Dunfermline for the meeting with Hibs. Carlos Bocanegra and Lee Wallace both recovered from injury to start and Lee McCulloch was also drafted into the side. Sone Aluko began his controversial two-match ban for diving, while Thomas Bendiksen and Kirk Broadfoot were dropped to the bench. Fenlon named an unchanged side from the one who saw their game abandoned at Motherwell last week on his managerial debut. Rangers were threatening early on when Gregg Wylde whipped a cross into the box from the left for Steven Whittaker but he connected awkwardly and was denied a clean shot at goal just six yards out. At the other end, Hibs had the chance to put their visitors under pressure with a free-kick 35 yards out which was flighted into the area by Ivan Sproule. Whittaker's headed clearance landed at the feet of Lewis Stevenson, who dragged his shot across the face of goal and narrowly past the post. Maurice Edu then picked up the first booking of the game after nine minutes for a challenge on Garry O'Connor. David Wotherspoon was the next player to go into referee Iain Brines' book for a tug on Edu's jersey. Real chances from either side were few and far between but it was proving to be a busy afternoon for the match official with Kyle Bartley also cautioned for fouling O'Connor. Hibs could have snatched the opener on the stroke of half-time when a Sproule ball in the box was completely missed by Wallace and fell for Leigh Griffiths. But he squandered a great chance by firing straight into the grateful hands of goalkeeper Allan McGregor. Bocanegra's name was also taken by the referee 10 minutes after the restart, before Rangers swapped Bartley for Bendiksen, who impressed on his first competitive start last week. Hibs fans claimed a penalty for handball against Whittaker but the pleas were ignored by the referee. However, Brines did point to the penalty spot at the other end moments later when Wallace was fouled in the box by Michael Hart and Jelavic converted to hand Rangers the lead after 61 minutes. Hibs should have levelled almost immediately when Paul Hanlon threw himself in front of Sproule's free-kick only to send his diving header over the crossbar when he looked certain to hit the target. Rangers doubled their advantage when Jelavic grabbed his second of the day after 69 minutes. Wylde was the provider with a corner from the left which found the Croatian unmarked in the box and the striker left goalkeeper Graham Stack no chance with the header. Rangers goalkeeper McGregor was called into action to claw a deflected cross from Hanlon away from goal before the ball broke for Isaiah Osbourne who failed to connect properly and bury the rebound. Hibs handed youngster Ross Caldwell his debut in the final minutes but there was no way back for the Edinburgh club by then.
