Match Preview
McCall aims to end season high Motherwell manager Stuart McCall has backed his side to bounce back from consecutive Clydesdale Bank Premier League defeats when they face Hibernian at Easter Road. The Fir Park outfit have seen their lead in third place in the SPL cut to five points after losses against Kilmarnock and Rangers. McCall is confident, however, that his team possess more than enough character to rediscover their form. "It doesn't matter how many points there are between ourselves and United or St Johnstone after the weekend. What matters is the gap at the end of the season," McCall said. "We lost three games in a row over the Christmas and New Year period and dropped below Hearts and St Johnstone. At that stage the team showed great character to bounce back. "It's going to be an exciting end to the season and I am confident in the ability of my players to bounce back from two defeats in a row and finish the season on a high. "The bottom line is you want to get all three points or at least a point and I think our play merited that last week. "Overall we take a lot of positives from a good performance against what was a strong Rangers side." Despite their 3-2 success over Inverness last weekend, Hibs remain just six points clear of Dunfermline at the foot of the SPL table. Motherwell have recorded two victories over the Easter Road side already this season and McCall is confident of adding to that tally when the teams meet again on Sunday. "We put in one of our best performances of the season at Easter Road and we have shared some cracking matches at Fir Park too," he added. "I am really happy to be where we are. I looked at the fixtures at the start of the season and thought the Hibs game might be the one that decided whether we would make the top six." Motherwell will be without Steven Hammell and Steve Jennings for the trip to Easter Road after both players accumulated six yellow cards over the course of the campaign. Hibs midfielder David Wotherspoon believes this season can still be a memorable one, despite their ongoing relegation worries. Their league form has been a genuine issue for their supporters, but with a Scottish Cup semi-final against Aberdeen looming large next weekend, Wotherspoon sees reason to believe things can still end on a happy note. He said: "We have that ahead of us and it would be a great turnaround for the season if we could make the final and secure our place in the SPL. "That would be a great end to the season. "Hopefully we can get a victory and confidence from the Motherwell game and then push on. "The season hasn't been great - 2011 was pretty awful for us all but we've come through it together and hopefully we can push on." Wotherspoon is also aware that Hibs cannot afford for their penultimate game of the season against Dunfermline to be a relegation battle. Pat Fenlon`s men face Motherwell, Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Aberdeen before their televised encounter with the Pars, and Wotherspoon hopes things are sorted before then. "The ideal scenario would be that the Dunfermline game does not matter when we head into it," he said. "Hopefully we can get the wins we need and we'll get there. "It was a great result for the boys last weekend at Inverness, the gaffer said it would be a great feeling if we managed to get the win after Dunfermline lost on the Saturday to Dundee United. "It did ease the pressure a wee bit but there is still a lot to play for, we have six games ahead. "We'll take this one on Sunday and hopefully get another three points." Hibernian captain Ian Murray is unlikely to be available despite returning in a midweek bounce game following hip surgery in January. The match is also likely to come too soon for winger Danny Galbraith as he steps up his comeback bid from a groin problem. Manager Pat Fenlon has everyone else available.
