Match Report

Three second-half goals brought Hereford United's run of nine games without a win to an end but pushed Boston United a step nearer the brink.

The Lincolnshire side, who were able to name just three substitutes, now face a tough battle to hold on to their league status.

In a first half which was relentless in its mediocrity, neither side really looked like breaking the deadlock.

Hereford had the first chance when Andy Williams, restored to a striking role, broke away from his marker and fired in a 25-yarder which goalkeeper Andy Marriott grasped low down.

At the other end, a scuffed shot from Francis Green was easily dealt with by Wayne Brown.

Hereford might have taken the lead from the second of two corners forced in quick succession.

DannyThomas' flag kick picked out Phil Gulliver perfectly, but the big centre-back misdirected his header wide of the target.

Moments of quality tended to be few and far between as the sides traded off-target volleys, Williams shooting high over Hereford and Ernie Cooksey doing the same for the visitors.

Boston might have done better, however, when Mark Greaves was unmarked in the area to receive a free-kick from Jamie Clarke, but failed to control the ball and the chance was gone.

Hereford finally broke through in the 56th minute when Thomas played in Simon Travis on the right of the Boston penalty area.

He crossed for Ben Smith whose shot was blocked, but only as far as Steve Guinan who blasted the ball into the net from close range.

It was the on-loan striker's 50th goal for the club and Hereford's first in 630 minutes of action, an unwanted club record.

Fifteen minutes later, Hereford found the net again when Williams raced on to a neat pass from Steve Jennings and slid the ball home from a narrow angle.

But the best of the goals came in added time.

Tim Sills was fouled on the edge of the Boston area and substitute Alan Connell stepped up to curl a perfect shot from the free-kick into the top right-hand corner of Marriott's net.
