Back on Trentside Steve Guinan once again proved the scourge of Notts County, who slipped to their first home defeat in the season.
They left themselves with rather too much to do having gone two goals down by half-time - both the outcome of lightening counter-attacks by Hereford United.
The visitors opened the scoring after 13 minutes when Ben Smith's explosive shot from the edge of the area took a slight deflection to carry it away from Kevin Pilkington.
Then that man Guinan popped up for the first of his two goals. Theo Robinson got away down the right-hand side and crossed perfectly for Guinan, unmarked inside the six-yard box, to head sharply into the net.
Notts seemed to be somewhat harshly treated when an Adam Tann header went past Hereford goalkeeper Wayne Brown, but was ruled out for a push just before half-time.
Notts raised their game in the second half in the first 15 minutes, during which manager Steve Thompson made three substitutions.
He was rewarded when, shortly after coming off the bench, defender Gary Silk put Notts back in the game when the ball broke to him off a defensive wall.
But then it was time for Guinan to strike again. Clean through the middle he made no mistake with a rasping finish - the second time in two seasons that Guinan has got a brace against Notts.
But the home side were not finished with and Hector Sam gave them hope with a low drive after 75 minutes.
It was the signal for more Notts pressure, but the Hereford defence always looked to be in control and ensured a fourth away win of the season in only five matches, a truly impressive record.
The defeat brought Notts' unbeaten run of three games to an end in front of the season's smallest crowd at Meadow Lane.
