Super sub Simon Yeo's cameo performance was not enough to send Chester City to the summit of League Two.
The much-travelled striker came off the bench to score but his stint was short lived as he limped off 15 minutes later.
Yeo's strike was cancelled out by Toumani Diagouraga for HerefordUnited, who perhaps deserved more than a point from the game.
The opening goal came after 58 minutes when Yeo, who had just come on for youngster Paul McManus, pounced following a goalmouth scramble and drilled the ball low under keeper Wayne Brown from six yards out.
But Hereford were not to be denied and dominated much of the second half with some slick passing which Chester struggled to deal with.
Their pressure paid off in the 77th minute when Diagouraga diverted the ball past City keeper John Danby from close range after the home team had failed to deal with Clint Easton's corner.
Two minutes later striker Theo Robinson forced Danby into a fine save at his near post as Hereford pressed for the winner.
A win would have taken either team to the top of the league and once Hereford scored they looked the more likely, but they were unable to find the winning goal.
It was an exciting second half, with action at both ends of the pitch.
The first half was a little more cagey. The first opportunity of the game came Chester's way in the 8th minute when former City keeper Brown showed great agility in diving full length to save Paul Linwood's header.
The visitors had a good shout for a penalty on 25 minutes when Diagouraga's driven cross struck Linwood on the hand, but referee Clive Oliver waved away their appeals.
Chester had the better of the first half, with Richie Partridge looking particularly dangerous down the left flank.
Perhaps the best chance of the first half arrived in stoppage time, when Hereford's Easton was denied by an excellent smothering save from Chester keeper Danby.
Chester's goal came after a decent period of pressure from Hereford, whose skipper Karl Broadhurst should have opened the scoring with a header just seconds before Yeo's strike.
