Kello: We`re starting to relax
Hearts goalkeeper Marian Kello admits the players are now more relaxed about the club's financial predicament after a difficult few months - as their recent results would suggest.
Hearts only one won game out of seven immediately after players first experienced significant delays in being paid in October.
But they have won four out of the last five games, conceding only one goal, ahead of this weekend`s Clydesdale Bank Premier League clash with St Mirren and have been given some form of assurance they will be paid quickly this month, with their latest wages due on Monday.
Kello, who is open to leaving the club this month to help their finances, said: "The situation wasn't easy. Each player was thinking a lot about what to do.
"All the players were asking questions. At some point we had no answers, but the situation got better and better.
"The situation settled down a bit and we are more relaxed.
"Finally we got some results recently so it's positive now.
"I think the results talk for us. We have tried to concentrate and do our job and get the best results we can."
Manager Paulo Sergio believes the honest approach he adopted with his players when he took over in August has helped him deal with the difficult situation.
"If you are honest with them, if they feel you are on their side and fighting together, when you have a specific message to give them, I think it's easier," Sergio said.
"I don't believe in leadership with two faces. Actors change their face each job they do. I'm not that kind of person.
"I said that in the beginning - I work with my players the same way I work with my kids. With truth, honesty and values.
"With an honest relationship, it's easy to be together and to fight these hard moments, no matter the problems."
Hearts are looking to extend a three-match winning run at Tynecastle but Sergio knows they face a tough challenge against Danny Lennon's team.
"St Mirren is a team I have a lot of respect for," Sergio said.
"They play quality football, they have good players, their manager has just renewed his contract.
"So they have consistency and we know we're going to have to work hard to beat them."
The hosts have a shortage of experienced left-backs for visit of the Buddies.
Ryan McGowan is suspended and Danny Grainger had a setback after returning from groin surgery, although Sergio said it was not serious.
Right-back Jamie Hamill is fit and Darren Barr is a doubt following a head wound while Mehdi Taouil (hamstring) remains on the sidelines and Ryan Stevenson is still unavailable.
St Mirren boss Lennon will turn his attentions elsewhere after his bid to take John Sutton on loan from Hearts was rejected.
Lennon was interested in bringing the 28-year-old striker back to the Paisley club where he played for two years between 2005-07.
However, ahead of the clash with the Jambos, Lennon revealed his interest was over due to finances.
"I can't go in with any more money," he told Press Association Sport. "We've not got it. We are where we are as far as what we can pay.
"So as far as I'm concerned it's dead."
Lennon will take no notice of Hearts' lucky escape against junior side Auchinleck Talbot last week.
Gordon Smith's late winner saved the Jambos' blushes blushes in the William Hill Scottish Cup against the battling Ayrshire team, who had a contentious offside decision go against them in injury time which ruled out Gordon Pope's goal to prevent the visitors earning a money-spinning replay.
"We have all been there," said the Buddies boss. "Last week Hearts dominated the game and the Auchinleck keeper was fantastic on the day.
"You get games like that throughout the season.
"Hearts are a good quality side but we look to go to the capital and win."
Jim Goodwin remains a doubt for the away side.
The Buddies skipper is still struggling with a calf strain which kept him out of the William Scottish Cup fourth-round tie against Hamilton last week.
Striker Steven Thompson is training again after missing the Accies game with a tight hamstring.
Skacel treble lifts Hearts to third
Rudi Skacel struck a hat-trick as 10-man Hearts beat St Mirren 5-2 to claim a fifth win in six games and move into third place in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.
A frenetic opening quarter began when Marius Zaliukas headed in Ian Black's corner in the opening minute before the defender was sent off for tripping the excellent Paul McGowan 11 minutes later.
McGowan equalised from the penalty spot and Steven Thompson headed Saints' second after 19 minutes before Skacel found his range.
The Czech midfielder, whose contract is set to expire at the end of this month, equalised with a fierce shot after 23 minutes, struck his second after 64 minutes and a third after 69 minutes to enhance his bargaining power in negotiations - or for a move elsewhere.
Striker John Sutton, who was linked with a return to Paisley earlier this week, added a fifth in the final minute following an indirect free-kick in the area to complete the win.
Referee Steven McLean's decision to award the penalty and show Zaliukas a straight red card is sure to provoke further discussion, even though Hearts prevailed to go third in the standings above Motherwell, who lost 1-0 to Inverness.
The Buddies, meanwhile, are now without a win in four matches, since the defeat of SPL defending champions Rangers.
Hearts' recent unbeaten run has come since the first-team squad instructed players' union PFA Scotland to make a formal complaint following three successive months of delayed wages.
January's salary is due on Monday and should Hearts again fail to pay their squad on schedule, disciplinary proceedings would be triggered with the prospect of unlimited sanctions.
A burden had been lifted since the complaint was lodged, with Hearts playing with a freedom which has now delivered 15 goals in six games.
It took Hearts 84 minutes to break down Ayrshire juniors Auchinleck Talbot last week, but today they claimed the lead after 51 seconds.
Scott Robinson forced a corner and Black's set-piece found Zaliukas unmarked six yards out in the centre of the goal to head in.
Saints were awarded a penalty and Zaliukas was sent off after 12 minutes.
Kenny McLean's delightful ball over the top found McGowan, who was tripped when through on goal by last man Zaliukas as Marian Kello fielded the ball.
The Saints striker netted before gesturing to the incensed Tynecastle crowd, earning a booking and thus avoiding disciplinary proceedings at the hands of the Scottish Football Association's compliance officer.
The Buddies took the lead when Marc McAusland's cross from the right found Thompson, who beat Adrian Mrowiec to the ball and lofted a header over Kello.
Hearts equalised after the visitors failed to clear a corner, Skacel barging Jeroen Tesselaar off the ball and unleashing a fierce shot from 25 yards to score.
The tempo of the game began to slow as the pace of the opening period caught up with both teams.
Black was booked for an attempted trip on McGowan and Hearts boss Paulo Sergio was spoken to by referee McLean after leaving his technical area to protest against the decision.
Kello parried a Graham Carey drive from the left edge of the box before Skacel restored Hearts' lead.
Jamie Hamill's long throw found Sutton, who laid the ball off and Skacel made space before firing a shot into the bottom corner.
Five minutes later Skacel completed his hat-trick.
Black won the ball and Skacel struck another effort from the edge of the area which beat Craig Samson.
St Mirren brought on Nigel Hasselbaink up front and forged forward, but Hearts absorbed the pressure.
Samson unwittingly conceded an indirect free-kick in the box after Tesselaar attempted to control a ball into the box.
From six yards out, Black found Sutton, who drove the ball into the roof of the net to gain just reward for his efforts up front.
