Sergio calls for improved performance
Paulo Sergio has demanded more from his Hearts side as they seek to climb above Sunday's opponents St Johnstone in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League and claim a place in Europe.
Victory for St Johnstone, who enter the fixture with a one-point lead over Hearts, would wrap up fifth place for the Perth side and a place in the Europa League next term.
If that were to happen, Hearts' only avenue to continental competition would be by winning the first all-Edinburgh Scottish Cup final since 1896.
In what could prove to be his final match at Tynecastle, Sergio is seeking an improved performance after a 2-2 draw at Dundee United and 1-0 loss to Motherwell.
"We lost two great chances to have a better position," said the Hearts boss, who is out of contract this summer.
"We can do better, but the bigger problem was our effectiveness.
"In both games we had six, seven good situations to score and we did not allow great chances for our opponents, but they were effective and we weren't.
"These games are very important to us. We have achieved top six, but if we can be fifth or fourth, we shouldn't want to be sixth.
"Let's keep doing what we have been doing, but we should have better effectiveness to get a result.
"We have a lot to play for in this game and we know that throughout the season we haven't had the better of results against St Johnstone.
"We have lots to prove to ourselves, first of all that we can get a result."
Striker Craig Beattie (hamstring) is again set to miss out, Ian Black continues to nurse a hernia problem while Adrian Mrowiec (knee) has returned to training. Jamie Hamill (knee) is out.
If Hearts finish sixth in the SPL, Sergio insists it would still be a success after a campaign in which there have been numerous off-field concerns, not least delayed payment of player wages.
"We have three games to end the season, most other teams just two," said Sergio, in reference to the May 19 cup final with Hibernian.
"Our target was to be in the top six so it can't be a disappointment when you reach your target and you're in the cup final.
"It was a pity we didn't get the points in the last two games.
"But we still have the chance to be fifth and we're going to fight for that."
Opposite number Steve Lomas insists St Johnstone deserve a European spot for their efforts this season.
The Northern Irishman took over as boss in November following the departure of Derek McInnes to npower Championship side Bristol City and continued the progression of the McDiarmid Park club.
Saints have stumbled in the last month, in part, due to suspension and injury, but find themselves narrowly ahead of Hearts knowing three points on Sunday will guarantee fifth spot.
Asked if his side deserved that place, Lomas said: "I think so. If you look at our budget, if we are not the worst (in the SPL) then we are very close to it.
"So to be in the top six is a massive achievement by the boys, there are no two ways about it. "
Lomas travels to Gorgie encouraged by his side's display in the 1-0 defeat by Celtic at Parkhead on Thursday night, despite it being Saints' third defeat in a row.
Although there was never any real prospect of chalking up their second win in the east end of Glasgow this season, the Perth men were vastly improved from their 5-1 thrashing by Motherwell last week.
The former Manchester City, West Ham and QPR midfielder added: "The encouraging thing is that if we get that level of performance that we got against Celtic, we will be okay.
"Obviously we would have wanted to make a better fist of the games after the split but we have been missing key players.
"We have had five or six of our regular starters out. We had a couple back against Celtic although Chris Millar pulled up again.
"I thought Callum Davidson was magnificent against Celtic, he hadn't played in six weeks but I thought he was brilliant, as they all were, I thought it was a good performance."
Midfielder Millar had to come off just before the break at Celtic Park with a recurrence of a groin injury and will be assessed, as will defender Frazer Wright after he missed out with a knock.
Striker Fransciso Sandaza is suspended, midfielder Lee Croft is still out with a hamstring injury and Dave Mackay is likely to be missing again due to a family issue.
On-loan Celtic forward James Keatings returns after being sidelined for the game against his parent club.
