Match Preview

Hawks without duo Havant & Waterlooville go into their FA Cup first round clash against fellow non-league side Droylsden without the services of Craig Robson and Shaun Wilkinson. Robson is struggling with a back injury while fellow midfielder Wilkinson has not featured since breaking an ankle just over a year ago. Robson apart, manager Shaun Gale has a fully-fit squad at his disposal as the Hawks look to build upon their rich FA Cup history. This will be the fifth time Havant & Waterlooville have reached the first round proper since merging in 1998, with their finest moment coming in 2007/08 when they saw off Notts County and Swansea on their way to meeting Liverpool in the third round. The Blue Square South outfit twice took the lead at Anfield before going down 5-2 in a memorable tie. Gale will be hoping for more success this season, and will be able to call upon the experience of former Portsmouth and Serbia defender Dejan Stefanovic whom he tempted out of retirement last month. Droylsden manager Dave Pace will have defender Lee Roche back for the trip. Full-back Roche missed the 3-0 win over Workington in midweek due to a bout of flu but is likely to return in place of James Vaughan. Should Roche be passed fit, the only injury concern for Pace is substitute goalkeeper Matty Towns, who injured a hand in training last week. Captain Paul Phillips will continue in goal with Pace eyeing a loan move to bring in cover if Towns cannot play in a tie which the boss expects to be tough even though his side are now unbeaten in their last nine league and cup outings. He said: "Havant are a big side, they are second favourites for promotion from Blue Square Bet South and they'll have home advantage against us, so we realise we're in for a tough game. "Having memorably led Liverpool twice at Anfield as recently as three years ago, Havant clearly know what the cup's all about, even though they now have just one survivor from that team. "I'm told Havant have a decent pitch, which will suit our passing game, We know that, providing we perform, it will take an exceptional team to stop us going into the next round."

Match Report

Havant bow out to Droylsden Havant & Waterlooville fans can forget about any FA Cup heroics against the likes of Liverpool for another year as Droylsden grabbed a deserved 2-0 victory at West Leigh Park. The visitors broke the deadlock through centre-back John Hardiker and secured their path to the second round with Ciaran Kilheeney's late goal. The home side dominated the opening exchanges and had the first chance of the game in the 14th minute but Manny Williams fired over when one-on-one with Droylsden keeper Paul Phillips. Kilheeney shoud have put Droylsden in the lead just five minutes later only to somehow turn a whipped cross over the bar from six yards out. But 10 minutes after the break the travelling faithful did have something to cheer about as Hardiker met a Liam Brownhill corner to powerfully head home. And as the home side looked for an equaliser they were caught short at the back and Kilheeney slotted home from six yards to put Droylsden in the hat.
