Match Report

Hartlepool easily won a game between two sides still looking for League One safety points and the points have virtually killed off their lingering relegation worries.

They were always on top, Yeovil struggling to create real chances when they did manage to go forward.

With heavy snow showers alternating with bright sunshine in a cold wind, Pools dominated the first half, despite losing defender Sam Collins and top scorer Richard Barker through injury in the first quarter.

Joel Porter smashed a low shot against the Yeovil post on eight minutes as the home team swarmed forward, but they had to wait until the 28th minute for a goal.

It came when Andy Monkhouse took a quick throw on the left that sent Porter into the area, he pulled a great ball back from the goal-line for sub James Brown to smash his shot into the bottom corner from 15 yards.

The visitors were rarely able to attack and their only first half chance came just before half-time when Stephen Maher's left-wing cross found Marcus Stewart, whose header was pushed round the post by home keeper Arran Lee-Barrett.

They made more of a game of it after the break, but Hartlepool doubled their lead on 67 minutes when Monkhouse crossed low from the left after a good back-heel from Richie Humphreys and Porter was there to slot home.

Hartlepool dominated the rest of the game, though Yeovil threw men forward in the last quarter, but the best they could manage was a Stewart shot saved by Lee-Barrett.

In added time sub Marvin Williams slammed his shot against the post with an effort that deserved to earn his side a consolation for their hard work.
