Austin blow for Pools Neil Austin looks likely to miss Hartlepool's clash with Colchester at Victoria Park. The defender picked up a calf strain in the 4-0 midweek defeat at Oldham, which looks set to rule him out of this weekend's fixture. Other than Austin, Pools boss Mick Wadsworth has no fresh injury concerns or suspensions to contend with. Hartlepool's only long-term absentee is young midfielder Billy Blackford, who has yet to make his first-team debut. Goalkeeper Scott Flinders had spent four months on the sidelines nursing a ruptured finger but made his return against Oldham. Flinders replaced Jake Kean in the line-up after the Blackburn youngster's loan spell expired. Colchester goalkeeper Ben Williams is set to miss the trip. Williams suffered a back injury during the warm-up ahead of Tuesday night's clash at Charlton but started the match, only to be withrawn at half-time after the problem worsened. Mark Cousins came on for the second half and is poised to start his first game since October at Victoria Park. Boss John Ward is otherwise likely to stick with the line-up narrowly beaten 1-0 at The Valley. Defensive duo Magnus Okuonghae and Brian Wilson saw specialists about their ankle injuries this week and could return to action later this month. Midfielder John-Joe O'Toole and centre-back Morten Knudsen remain long-term absentees with knee injuries.

Late Sweeney strike stuns Us Antony Sweeney's 11th goal of the season ended Hartlepool's winless run as Colchester were consigned to a 1-0 defeat. Pools looked set for a eighth game without a win, but leading scorer Sweeney struck three minutes from time to stun John Ward's side. The home side only sparked into life with the introduction of substitute Colin Larkin, whose pace and direct running caused problems for Colchester. He latched onto Paul Murray's pass after 65 minutes, turned inside Nathan Clarke and only saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Mark Cousins before snatching the follow up from Ritchie Humphreys. The decisive strike came when a Humphreys free-kick dropped into the penalty area and fell nicely for Sweeney, who made no mistake with a right-foot finish. But the Us had two chances to snatch a point. First Steve Gillespie and Kayode Odejayi went for the same ball, before Gillespie was presented with a free header six yards out but failed to hit the target.
