Match Preview

All clear for Pools Hartlepool first-team coach Mick Wadsworth has no fresh injury concerns for the clash with Brentford at Victoria Park. Forward James Brown (ankle/knee) and midfielder Paul Murray (knee) should be available after the former came on in the 1-0 defeat at home to Huddersfield in midweek and the latter lasted 69 minutes before being taken off. It remains to be seen if both start as Brown has been plagued with injuries all season and 34-year-old Murray has played a lot of games recently. Neil Austin remains in the treatment room with the calf problem that has sidelined him for the last seven games, so Steve Haslam will continue to occupy the right-back slot. Wadsworth has no other injury or suspension problems. Pools` small squad will be tested to the limit in the coming weeks when they face five games in 15 days. Brentford boss Nicky Forster could have Adam Reed available for his first game as permanent manager. The on-loan Sunderland midfielder, who was born in Hartlepool, has yet to make his debut for the Bees and has been struggling with a groin problem but will face a late check before the trip. Long-term absentee Sam Wood will miss out again as he continues his rehabilitation from a broken arm but Forster has an otherwise fully-fit squad. Midfielder Kevin O'Connor suffered no reaction to his groin problem during the 1-1 midweek draw with Notts County and is likely to carry on, while defender Leon Legge has fully overcome a back problem and will be pushing for a recall. Fellow defender Marcus Bean is in line to make his 100th league start for Brentford and striker Gary Alexander is just one goal away from his 150th professional strike.

Match Report

Monky magic for Pools Two goals from in-form Andy Monkhouse and a thumping Gary Liddle strike earned Hartlepool a 3-0 win against Brentford and lifted them into 10th spot in League One. It also meant a first defeat for new Brentford boss Nicky Forster in his seventh game in charge. And he could have few complaints as his side was second best by some distance. Monkhouse opened the scoring after 36 minutes when his shot crashed off the underside of the crossbar and bounced over the line, with assistant referee Simon Clayton flagging to confirm it had gone in. Pools` Antony Sweeney headed past his own post in a rare defensive scare, but Monkhouse grabbed his fifth goal in six games shortly afterwards. Sweeney ran across the back four and laid the ball off for Monkhouse to drill home. Brentford's only real chance came when Gary Alexander turned inside the six-yard box and Scott Flinders saved with his legs. And Pools finished the game off in the 84th minute. Colin Larkin's deep cross was nodded back across goal by Leon McSweeney for Liddle to drill home from 12 yards.
