Match Report

Swansea let two points slip in the dying stages as they failed to see off struggling Hartlepool.

Eifion Williams pounced in injury time to cancel out Leon Britton's 20th minute opener.

And not even the return of star striker Lee Trundle could soften the blow as Swansea's miserable new year continued.

Trundle, who had been expected to be out for six weeks with an ankle injury, was back after just three weeks away from the first-team fold.

But the 29-year-old had to be content with a place on the bench as Bayo Akinfenwa and Leon Knight continued in their promising partnership.

There was no place for fellow new signing Darren Way whose transfer from Yeovil had not been completed in time for him to play, nor Tom Williams who broke down with a knee injury in midweek.

Kevin McLeod took Williams' place on the left and looked sharp, helped by the similarly bright Sam Ricketts as the hosts took control.

Akinfenwa twice tamely headed at goal when the cross deserved better while the Swans backline seemed more than capable of keeping the pacy Jon-Paul Pittman in check at the other end.

But Akinfenwa made up for his misses with a vital role in Britton's 20th minute opener, doing enough to put off Hartlepool keeper Dimitrios Konstantopoulos when Alan Tate crossed and allowed Britton to scramble home.

Konstantopoulos was left fuming after feeling he was pushed but his protests only earned him a yellow card.

Hartlepool's day soon got worse as Tom Butler had to be stretchered off to be replaced by Williams after just 27 minutes but the hosts failed to take advantage of the reshuffle before the break.

But Swansea were almost made to pay on 57 minutes as they failed to clear their lines from a corner and Pittman smashed the crossbar from inside the area with Willy Gueret completely stranded.

It was Pitman again who was causing problems as he broke once more on 62 minutes and forced Ricketts into a foul outside the box.

And it was left to Gueret to perform the heroics as he brilliantly tipped Gavin Strachan's set-piece over the bar.

It was enough to persuade Kenny Jackett to send on Trundle in place of Knight but he was helpless as Williams pounced with just seconds remaining.
