Anthony Sweeney powered home an unstoppable second-half header to clinch the point that Hartlepool needed to claim their place in the end of season play-offs. Sweeney struck in the 65th minute as he converted substitute Thomas Butler's cross from the left to earn a two-legged play-off encounter with Tranmere starting next week. Hartlepool had been forced to endure a troubled build up to the game - losing manager Neale Cooper in midweek - and they had to come from behind twice to deny Bournemouth the win they needed to move above them in the standings and into the top six. Bournemouth came into the match having lost their previous five games at home but Sean O'Driscoll's side made the perfect start by taking the lead after just 12 minutes. Winger Wade Elliott fashioned the opening on the right to cross for leading scorer James Hayter to head home his 21st goal of the campaign via the inside of the left-hand post. But Hartlepool had to wait just seven minutes to pull themselves level as they exposed Bournemouth's inability to defend in the air. Jon Daly rose above the home defence to head Matty Robson's cross goalwards, but goalkeeper Neil Moss should have done better as he was slow to react on his line. Moss showed much smarter reactions to clear his lines from an under-hit Elliott back pass on 25 minutes as Daly closed him down, before Hayter restored Bournemouth's lead with his second of the game in the 31st minute. Brian Stock delivered and in-swinging corner from the left for the striker to send a spectacular diving header into the back of the net from eight yards out. Hayter and midfielder Garreth O'Connor both went close to extending the home side's advantage before and after the interval, but Bournemouth grew increasingly tense as the second half progressed and a place in the top six loomed ever nearer. Moss did well to fall on a loose ball in the 57th minute as Michael Nelson prepared to shoot following a goalmouth scramble but he could do little to keep out Sweeney's 15th goal of the season eight minutes later.
