Match Report

Simon Mensing ensured Hamilton's season ended on a high as he gave his side victory at St Mirren.

His 27th-minute header was enough to separate the teams in a disappointing clash which was typical end-of-season fare.

St Mirren started strongly and Hugh Murray was not far away when he flicked on a free-kick from Andy Dorman but the ball slipped wide.

Sean Murdoch was then fortunate to escape when he failed to deal with a Garry Brady cross and the ball drifted onto the top of his net.

St Mirren continued to press and Billy Mehmet set up a shooting chance for Dorman but his effort was a couple of yards wide.

Hamilton hit back and Mark Howard did well to hold a free-kick from Derek Lyle in a busy penalty area.

It was the visitors who made the breakthrough after 27 minutes when Brian Easton sent over a dangerous corner and Mensing outjumped the Saints' defence to head home.

The goal was a blow to Saints who still had a mathematical chance of going down if they fell to a heavy defeat.

Brady came close to an equaliser three minutes from the break when he cut in from the left to meet Dorman's pass but he curled his shot just a foot wide.

The midfielder had another chance before the break but his left foot effort flew well wide when more composure was needed.

But Hamilton were not without menace and Richard Offiong was almost in but Will Haining was alert to clear the danger.

Billy Reid's side looked threatening on the break in the second half, but too often their final pass let them down when Saints were caught short at the back.

Brady had another sight of goal midway through the second half after good work by Steven Thomson but again he failed to hit the target with his hurried shot.

James McCarthy set up a chance for Joel Thomas at the other end and it took a good save from Howard to prevent Hamilton extending their lead.

Murdoch produced a better save at the other end moments later to keep out a Mehmet volley after Dorman had picked out his team-mate in the area.

Substitute Stephen O'Donnell almost snatched the equaliser just seconds after coming on, but his shot was marginally too high.
