Kanunnikov aiming to shoot down down Hajduk
Zenit St Petersburg youngster Maxim Kanunnikov is eager to build on his fledgling 29-minute European career when the Russian side look to secure their place in the next round of the Europa League on Thursday.
Zenit travel to Croatia to face Hajduk Split having won all three of their Group G matches so far. Victory against Hajduk - who they beat 2-0 in their last European outing - would seal their progress from the group stage.
Emerging talent Kanunnikov, who is forcing his way into the first-team picture despite Zenit's wealth of imported talent, has played minor substitute roles in the last two Europa League games. Despite only having 16 minutes in Anderlecht and 13 minutes against Hajduk under his belt, though, the striker is happy to take whatever opportunities come his way.
"I'm ready to help the team and it doesn't matter what role I play, whether it is from for the first minute or as a replacement," he told local reporters.
"The match will be a difficult one for us, there's no doubt about it, with a place in the next round at stake."
Kanunnikov is enjoying his time with the big boys.
"Alexander Anyukov, Igor Denisov and Alexander Kerzhakov are three of the most selfless senior guys when it comes to taking time for younger players," he revealed. "They are always helpful, giving you feedback if something does not work. Sometimes they even shout, but that's normal."
While Zenit could afford to give Kanunnikov an opportunity having already racked up nine points, Hajduk head into the game level on three points with AEK Athens and Anderlecht, with progression firmly in the balance.
The team from Split have a different coach to the recent 2-0 defeat in St Petersburg, with Goran Vucevic now in temporary charge following Stanko Poklepovic's sacking after a run of three defeats.
"I accepted the offer so from Sunday I am the new coach, but only for a while," said the 39-year-old Vucevic.
"I will be in charge until the board find a new coach, for the next two, maybe three games: but there is no way I will be here any longer. I will be going back to the youth teams."
Zenit through after narrow win
Zenit St Petersburg clung onto their 100% record in Europa League Group G with a narrow 3-2 victory at Hajduk Split which also ensured their place in the last 32 of the competition.
The Russians appeared to be cruising thanks to goals from Aleksei Ionov, Szabolcs Huszti and Alessandro Rosina, but strikes from Marin Ljubicic and Ante Vukusic set up an intriguing climax at the Stadion Poljud.
Zenit hung on for the win, though, which moves them eight points clear at the top of the standings with two matches remaining.
Hajduk made a confident start and Ivan Strinic warmed the palms of Zenit keeper Viacheslav Malafeev with his left-footed strike after nine minutes.
But the Russian visitors soon hit their stride and Fernando Meira headed inches over the bar before Aleksandr Aniukov had two chances in as many minutes - the first clearing the crossbar and the second swerving past the right post.
Hajduk responded with a fine shot from Marin Tomasov which had to be tipped round the post by Malafeev after 23 minutes.
But the Croatian side found themselves trailing eight minutes later when their defence failed to clear a corner from Rosina, allowing Ionov to tuck the ball into the bottom left of the net from near the penalty spot.
Zenit set about building on their lead and only the agility of Danijel Subasic prevented them from doing so, with the Hajduk goalkeeper producing two excellent diving saves to keep out efforts from Huszti and Rosina before the interval.
But it all began to fall apart for the home side at the start of the second half as they shipped two goals in four minutes.
Huszti fired home a penalty two minutes after the restart, making the most of the opportunity gifted to his side by Jurica Buljat's challenge on Alexander Bukharov.
And the Hajduk defender committed another foul soon after - this time on Huszti - to concede a second spot-kick.
Rosina stepped up to take this one, and although his effort was parried by Subasic, the Zenit midfielder made amends by putting away the rebound.
Hajduk managed to get themselves off the mark after 69 minutes thanks to Ljubicic, whose neat left-footed volley found the bottom corner following Strinic's cross.
And Vukusic further reduced the deficit seven minutes from time, tapping in a well-placed cross from Mario Maloca.
However, Hajduk were unable to complete the comeback and slipped to the foot of the group, albeit just one point behind Anderlecht and AEK Athens.
