Match Preview

Van Holsbeeck prepares for crucial clash Anderlecht manager Herman van Holsbeeck believes his side will face an almost impossible task to qualify from Europa League Group G if they come away empty handed from the match against Hajduk Split. The Belgian side head to Croatia three points behind joint leaders AEK Athens and Zenit St Petersburg after being ripped apart by the Russians in a 3-1 home defeat two weeks ago. The loss came as a shock to Anderlecht, whose domestic form this season has seen them climb to fourth in the Jupiler League table after an unbeaten run which includes five wins from eight matches. With a tough double-header against the Greeks ahead, Van Holsbeeck thinks that defeat at the Stadion Puljid will leave his side with a big mountain to climb to progress from the group. "If we return with empty hands, we must win all of our remaining games," Van Holsbeeck warned. "The match will not be easy, the stadium will be packed full and our opponents will want to entertain them." Van Holsbeeck reckons that Thursday's opponents, who sit top of the Croatian league after an unbeaten nine-match run, will put up a tough fight despite their surprise 3-1 defeat to the beleaguered Greek side a fortnight ago. "It will be a good test for us," the Anderlecht boss said. "Split has several talented players who can make the difference, but perhaps defensively, we can exploit possibilities for us. "The way we play is less important than the result. A point is a good result, anything else is a bonus." Hajduk head coach Stanko Poklepovic says it will be a "miracle" if his players can make the knockout stages, but is still confident they can do it. He said: "To get to the Europa League was a miracle for us. Now we are asking for another miracle. "We want a new miracle. We are prepared and organised. "Anderlecht has three variants of the game, we have studied them all and we know we will answer them. "Of course, we respect the opponent, we appreciate it, but we have faith in ourselves. "Anderlecht has a number of quality players and a rich European experience."

Match Report

Split peform late show Ante Vukusic was the hero as Hadjuk Split grabbed a 95th-minute winner against Anderlecht to steal what had been a scrappy Group G encounter. Both sides lost their opening group matches and neither really deserved better than a draw after a match low on creativity. But Vukusic was on target deep into injury time to give the Croatians renewed hope in the competition. The opening 10 minutes were a sign of things to come, both sides conceding a series of fouls and neither finding a way to test the opposition goalkeeper. With quarter of an hour gone Olivier Deschacht brought down Split's Mario Maloca, with Marin Tomasov and Marin Ljubicic combining well from the free-kick only for the latter to send his shot over the crossbar. Anderlecht responded with an inviting chance moments later, the ball breaking to Mbark Boussoufa six yards out only for home goalkeeper Danijel Subasic to make the save. Lukas Marecek then flashed a volley wide of the post in the 28th minute as the Belgians pressed. There was a shortage of clear opportunities before the half-time whistle, with inaccurate long-range efforts the order of the day and Vukusic heading tamely wide. The hosts were brighter after the break, Senijad Ibricic shooting over and Ljubicic having a shot charged down by Guillaume Gillet. Vukusic should have rewarded the pressure with a goal when he got on the end of Ivan Strinic's cross but he managed to send the ball wide from six yards. As the game passed the 70th minute, Jonathan Legear and Matias Suarez returned fire for Anderlecht, again without success. Things picked up in a frenetic last few minutes, Roland Juhasz diverting Olivier Deschacht's corner just wide then Ljubicic twice missing out in injury time as Anderlecht began to flag. That looked to be the end of it until, with nearly five minutes of added time gone, Ervin Bulku found Vukusic who steered home for a dramatic win.
