Match Preview

Trio could be back for Gills Gillingham manager Andy Hessenthaler is hoping to have three key players back for the visit of Torquay. Strikers Adebayo Akinfenwa and Cody McDonald have returned to training after shaking off knocks but it is not known whether Saturday's game could come too soon for the two frontmen. If both strikers do fail to make the squad, Dennis Oli will be the lone-striker once again. Danny Spiller has also returned to training and could be among the Gills substitutes while striker Mark McCammon is definitely ruled out by a recurrence of an ankle injury. Stefan Payne is pushing for a start after impressing in recent reserve team outings while Danny Jackman could return to the squad if he shakes off an ankle knock in time. Torquay manager Paul Buckle has no fresh injury concerns. He could welcome back Danny Senda for the trip to Priestfield after he recovered from a thigh strain and resumed training this week. Midfielder Lloyd Macklin signed a new contract in midweek and could be given a starting place as a reward while striker Martin Gritton may come into the attacking fold after scoring on reserve duty earlier this week. Joe Oastler will be looking for his first start since joining the Gulls from QPR on loan while Damon Lathrope is unavailable with an ankle injury. Former captain Nicky Wroe is likely to be left out of the squad again after he rejected a new contract at Plainmoor and placed on the transfer list.

Match Report

Gulls stun Gills Kevin Nicholson snatched a point with a last-gasp equaliser for 10-man Torquay as they earned a 1-1 draw at Gillingham. Nicholson drilled home a free-kick with the last kick of the game just as the Gulls looked set to lose to Cody McDonald's late strike. Both sides looked to attack from the off and within the opening 10 minutes both Romone Rose and Joe Oastler had goalbound efforts blocked for the visitors, Jack Payne going close for the Gills. McDonald went close to giving Gillingham the lead on the half-hour, his close-range stab pushed away by Scott Bevan. And Bevan was in action again minutes before the break, blocking Chris Palmer's low drive. Into the second half and Chris Zebroski was inches from giving Torquay an immediate lead, his volley rattling the crossbar. Neither side looked as though they could break the deadlock after that, but that all changed with 80 minutes gone, McDonald volleying home Danny Spiller's cross seconds after Adebayo Akinfenwa had headed against the bar. Torquay also saw Lee Mansell dismissed for simulation before Nicholson's heroics.
